Looking for brains to tan a deer hide. I can’t find any at the grocery store. Any suggestions?

I have a heifer head in the back of my truck that you can have if you can figure out how to get it down there. Otherwise, check at a slaughterhouse. They have to pay to dispose of them.

Slaughterhouse or meat shop will have them.

There’s alternatives... sunlight bar soap mixed with lard or margarine (of all things!) will work well. Nests foot oil and sunlight soap works too.

As mentioned, a slaughter house should have what you need.
Some good reading for those interested in learning how to tan.

If you do the slaughter house route, think twice about pig brains.
I haven’t used them but I hear they make for “greasy” leather.

Yeah I called red deer lake meats. They said they can’t even give them away re: Federal BSE regulations. Still looking.
Tried a few other spots and they gave me the same answer it seems.

Ya it’ll be hard to find a slaughter house/ butcher that’ll give away the heads with the potential of disease. Have to try a Hutterite colony or local farmer that does own butchering.

if you dont wanna deal with brains, egg yolk works just the same. a dozen will do a deer hide. If you use eggs with a strong yellow yolk you may get a slight yellow color on your hide but if you use the cheapest eggs possible that have a very light colored yolk i find that they dont make any sort of color at all.
PM me if you got any more questions, ive done about 5 deer hides into buckskin using the brain tan method. I have never done hair on.

I found a brain!! Neighbor of a friend indeed had a deer head. Got the brain out after we cut off the skull cap. I had the hide all stretched out and applied the brain milkshake. I added 4 egg yolks for fun, not sure if it was necessary but gave me something to talk about. I rubbed it in and it seemed to soak it in. Hide was barely wet but a little damp. I pulled and pushed on it for about an hour with my son. We then smoked it. It’s looking pretty rough but it’s my first. Anyways thanks for the recommendations. Still not done probably need to work it a little more to get it butter soft.

Please just remember to be very careful with the SRM's(specified risk materials)
Be a tough deal to contract Jacob-Creutzfeldt's accidentally. Take care!

As mentioned the egg tan solution does the same thing. Same chemical compounds
