Default Quiet 22 ammo

What do you guys use for subsonic 22 ammo for grouse, rabbit, etc?

Are there any RWS or eley dealers in Edmonton that would handle their lines of 22ammo?

Check the rabbits and squirrels thread. SOmeone mentioned some very quiet .22 ammo there.

22 cal for grouse is illegal, and 22 shorts, if your gun will shoot them, are what you are looking for.

Upland birds are not allowed to be shot with small caliber guns and you need a license to hunt them.

You is wrong on that one my friend !!!
Yes you need a bird game tag too hunt them, but a .22 is perfectly legal.

i musta hit my head, cause i thought it said that 22 was illegal for grouse?!?
Nope..there's no blood!?
since most grouse ive been shooting at lately have been wrapped in kevlar-spiderweb technology-ballistic-cloth-underarmour flak jacket.
im thinking 180 ballistic tips in 300wsm
ive used winchester CB long's and im not sure there are any benefits to ss22 for grouse, unless your deer hunting as well.
my poor aim was most of it, but the flight arc path of a ss round requires alot more practice than what i give it..
im blaming the recoil
a henry minibolt and subsonics would be a easy packing two pound grouse smasher

What are you smoking? 22 cal is only illegal for migratory game birds. Last time I checked, grouse stay here throughout the winter. Read your regulations thoroughly.

Well that's news to me and you could easily be right as I haven't hunted birds in longer than that. But it is out of season isn't it?

Then why did you reply???

Perhaps this poster wants to get ready for next season??

Some of us do that!
Practice, evaluate, and maybe even change part way through because things did'nt wring out the way we wanted with all the practice and evaluation.

I've used both Remington "Subsonic, and C Bees", the subsonic does hit alot harder than the Cb's though. Also Cb's wouldn't cycle my 10/22, yet the subsonic worked flawlessly, even took a coyote at about 50yds with the subsonic.

As far as who carries your prefered brands I would say Wholesale for sure, and perhaps P&D in Edmonton. Check out some of the shows for that sort of stuff as well.

I'm pretty sure taking chickens with a .22 is fine, it is the only thing I have ever shot them with. If the regs have changed I guess it's time to drag out the 20g, I knew I bought it for a reason.

yep....totally legal

i even used my .17 HMR this year on grouse around lease sites....makes for a good challenge trying to knock there heads off at 75+ yards!

even got stopped by a CO and his partner in training while taking a shot at one....missed the bird and he made sure to give me a ribbin about it while checking my papers LOL

Default did some research and some shopping

So I found out that subsonic speeds are a variable of temp. The colder it is the slower subsonic speeds are. Thus at 30deg F subsonic might be something like 1060fps and at 100deg F it may be something like 1130fps.

Apparently when a bullet goes trans-sonic (transition from supersonic to subsonic) there is a period of destabilization. So by sticking with a subsonic cartridge one should be able to avoid this phase altogether. This is info I've gathered off the internet so take it for what it's worth and I am by no means an expert on ballistics. Anyway, just playing around for now to see what happens.

So I picked up some Eley target pistol 22lr, some remington subsonic, some remington shorts, and some cci std velocity. All of which are between 1030 and 1070 fps except for the shorts which are high velocity at 1095fps. Hope to do some "testing" (aka: plinking) when I get a chance.

And yes I know grouse are out of season.

Myself I like the CCI Stingers but they do have a crack to them so if you are looking for quiet I say stick to the remington targets.
I also did not have a problem shooting some off then shooting at deer also. (yes with a different caliber)
Deer are not all that scared of the shot unless it is really loud. what I have found anyhow
