Default Free floating rifles

Can you put too much gap between the stock and the rifle barrel? I know the typical measuring tool is a paper bill, just wondering if you can have too much.

Default the less stock contact the better

the less parts moving in counteraction to the barrels natural vibration the better

so less stock touching a proper barrel the better. sometimes a paper bill isnt enough clearance you can hold the rifle the wrong way and have it touch

in my opinion

Absolutely not. Check out Jerry Teo's 6.5 Mystic rig. He's on SGN, "mystic player". More space under the barrel allows better cooling. A gap is a gap whether 0.100" or 10" .

No, a gap is a gap, but some light sporter barrels like some forend pressure against the barrel. Also, if the rifle in question is going to be used in the bush, I would not want a big gap between the barrel and stock as it would just fill up with crap. ie: snow, dirt, twigs, leaves, grass, etc.

Rifle is a Winchester model 70 featherweight 257 Roberts. Thats my concern since I have read about some rifles liking a bit of forend pressure. I was not happy with inconsistant groups regardless of factory ammo, or reloads. I've tried different powders, primers and bullets and all produced the same results for the most part. will see how it turns out this weekend.
Thanks again.

I have a Win Featherweight in 257. Actually it's a 257 Ackley, but whatever. I also have 270 Win in a Win Featherweight. They both demanded fore end pressure pts as have most if not all Win F.W. that I have seen.

Also what bullets are you using? If you're using a Boat Tail, switch to flat base. Doug at Hornady once told me unless the crown on the whippy wt rifles is absolutley perfect, boat tails may kick on exit. I had been using 139 gr bt's in my 280AI with dismal results. Switched to Flat base and what a difference. By the way this is a Rem Mtn Rifle and also required a fore end pressure pt.

Thanks Abe. I am using boat tails so will switch bullets and see what happens. What type of bullets are typically in the factory cartridge?
