Congrats to all the hunters this fall, this is like the first time in 40 something years I haven't been out in a November hunt, hope things change for next year.

New to the fourm this will be my first post. I enjoying seeing everyone’s success this year congratulations to everyone.
Our season took a turn in one morning. My wife and I have been in countless hours this year due to lack of work for both of us. This day was one of the most special experiences in my 15 years of hunting and I will never forget it.
My wife spotted this buck as he was chasing a hot doe. By the time we caught up to him he was at a farther range and she wasn’t comfortable making the shot, so I took it. After laying hands on my buck and soaking up the moment we notice a spike and small 3x3 pop over the hill on the same trail of the hot doe. After a minute of consideration my wife decided to pass the two smaller bucks and let them grow another year. Well as luck would have it moments later another buck crested the hill with this nose to the ground headed straight for us. She decided it was meant to be and made a perfect heart shot at 150 yards. There our two bucks lay 150 yards apart what a day!!

Got my first moose on a solo hunt this year, took a couple calls to carry it out 2km but got it done. Worth it for some moose meat that’s forsure!!

Best thread of the year in my estimation.
But it makes me kinda sad.
I miss the days when I could field dress and pack out a Moose on my own.
This year I didn't even buy a Moose tag. I knew I couldn't butcher one myself and couldn't be sure I could get help if I dropped one.
But I got a Whitetail tag and bird license.
Most days I simply wasn't feeling good enough to hunt but I did get out for six days over the three month season.
Three days hunting Grouse, saw two, shot zero.
Three days hunting Deer. Saw maybe a dozen bucks, shot zero.
Passed on two fork horns, had to pass on three good bucks (no permission)
Rest were out of range, or not during legal hours.
Even on the days I was out I wasn't entirely sure I could butcher even a small Deer on my own. Just the walk to my truck in the morning was playing me out, and it's only about twenty feet from my door.
Having bad lungs and a heart condition really sucks.

I was watching a little forker and I did a 180 and this guy was in the middle of the opening watching me. He didn't bolt and I didn't hesitate. Spent a lot of days out and just was not seeing white tails. Very happy with him. Tikka 708 and Barnes 120Gr ttsx & Varget.

I don't have any of the amazing animals that are shown here, but do have a great experience. I posted about hunting in 148 with all the snow late in the season. After all the advice and info, decided to give it a shot and make the best of it. Hunted the SK River Valley straight north of Medicine Hat. For those that have not seen it, it's straight up and down some places. Hence the adventure! So the story in 140 characters or less
Boys have never taken a big game animal. They peek over the edge at 4pm and younger boy sees two does. The Savage Youth Axis in 243 lights up and they drop the first one, 2 in the boiler! The older son didn't see the does at first so his Sporter MK4 Enfield was quiet.
I'm not even there yet, so start jogging towards the boys, and see my sons vigroursly gesticulating to their left! I go that way and get there and look down to see the second doe facing away, wondering about her companion. I rush the shot and miss. It happens. But it doesn't happen twice. After a blown opportunity in the morning it's all smiles now! Their first deer!
It's starting to get dark, while doing a quick field dressing I send the older boy to try to find an easy way back up, looks easier to the south. This is the lay of the land........ turns out there is no easy way out!
It's dark now, we fire up the head lamps. We give up thinking we can get the deer out and leave the sled. Snow in the valley is much worse than you think. Snow is hiding sink holes in the dark. Older boy falls in one to his waste, younger one to his armpits. Saw one that would hide a small car! We side hill along. Some spots are straight down, a slip might not end well. This is more than I bargained for! But a hike down and around though the valley to the ranch yard and out is probably 5 km + and nasty snow and surprises. So over course or an hour and a half we manage to snake our way up and out, using any foot hold and hand hold we could. The boys were quite jacked to finally climb up and out!
But now what??!! Head back into town (have a beer for my nerves!) and hatch a plan. Speak to the wife. She must have been on pinterest. She suggests we pick up a cheap xmas tree storage bag and drag them up whole and clean like in that, one at a time. Crazy enough it just might work! After some quick morning shopping in the xmas isle at home depot, we show up with an xmas tree bag, 2ft of rebar and about 500 ft of rope & a hammer.
Step 1 - anchor two sets of rope onto rebar pounded into ground
Step 2 - go bring sled back to where we started from (a good hour slog)
Step 3 - bag up deer!
Step 4 - PULL! The boys pulled from the top on one rope, I used the second rope to pull myself up, while guiding the deer.
And taking a break half way up
Two hours later they were at the top, truck was close by. I don't think I've really ever felt feeling of accomplishment for harvesting a doe. But I certainly did on this trip. Proud of how the two lads handled the adversity. Certainly no sheep hunting adventure, but it was our adventure and the venison will be that much better because of it!
PS: Sorry, I got a bit longer than 140 characters, but that's our 2020 rifle harvest!
