Default Which mechanical for spring bear?

2013 Elite....55 lbs. 28.5 draw. Right around 270 fps.

Which mechanical do you recommend for spring bear? I like the look of the Rage 40KE....some good reviews for lower poundage shooters.

You are far from being considered a low poundage shooter. Take your pick of which mechanicals you want to shoot. You won't need to shoot the rage 40ke From most post on this site your more popular selections will be
- grim reapers
- rage
- NAP spit fires
Other popular choices
- wasp jak hammer sst
- g5 T3
-ulmers edge
- shwackers

Any of the above will work just fine for black bears.

X2 no worries with fixed blades. Also slower bows are easier to broadhead tune so you don't have to worry about accuracy.

Where's the Meat Seekers? No list is complete without these...
They're bullet proof IMO.

I agree on the fixed...even with the low poundage with shots being usually 20 yards and under a fixed head will work wonders...
Although bears are one of the easist animals to take down with a well placed arrow...things can and have gone wrong with lower poundage bows and mecanicals..
...I have guided for bears for over 30 years and many big camps will not allow the use of mecanicals...

..this is not a mecanical smack down as they do work and work well..and some fixed even fail ...

Use what you are most comfortable and confident in...

I like the Slick Tricks and the Muzzy's about the same price and both fly great.

I would never use mechanicals on bears. They have a very thick hide, lots of fat, and dense bone. I personally stick with a fixed blade with a chisel point. I really like shuttle t-locs black ops. Good luck on your hunt!

I had a talk with him about them too. They sound like a good choice coming from a voice of experience and lots of it.

Use the reapers and don't think a second thought. They have worked awesome for me for the last 4 years and have been 100% reliable. Use them and "watch them drop" for real.

grim reaper has a new hybrid BH that I will be using next fall, too bad it isn't available for this spring. Hope the link works.

Wasp Jak Hammers and Grim Reapers are excellent broadheads. Deadly accurate and huge wound channels. Short blood trails.

Not sure about the hybrid, seem to me it would offer the worst of both style. Harder to tune for proper flight like fixed broad head, Possible mechanical failure and not as tough as a traditional fixed blade. To me, you have to make a decision, mechanical or not, not in between.

This year I will be shooting Slick trick again and maybe will try the Ulmer's edge if I decide to go mechanical. I have bought a pack of Ulmer Edge and they do fly like my field point, so if I run into tuning issues going into hunting season this fall, I will buy a new pack and they will be on my arrows. Otherwise I will stick with the fixed blades.

I hate grim reaper mechanicals, aluminum garbage. I have had nothing but terrible luck with them busting blades off and tough recoveries. Wasp Jackhammers 1 3/4" gets my vote. Im sticking with big fixed blade heads this year though.

My focus was on impact placement first then BH second.
Not a deer or elk or moose etc. here, different animal.
(location of a heart shot).
Once I learned the heart position then I checked out BH diffs.
for thicker ribbs and closer shoulder blade locations etc.
Other wise would go with fixed and flies like a target head.
Muzzy's, Thunderheads, QAD, etc.
Another thing is I'm thinking shots no further than 25 yards.
(at 25 yards you cant miss a heart the size of a dinner plate).
Bear in your face, so to speak.

Your situation/location and geer may be different so you have to take that into
concideration.

Or you could stick that bear in the butt at 60 yards with a Grim Peeper and set the whole town on fire in the Sunday paper.
With a warning about a wounded bear seeking revenge.
