Default Red Dot Sights On Lever

I no this sounds like sacrilege but has anyone tried mounting a red dot sight on a lever action?

I was taking a look at reviews of the Burris FastFire II & III and thought it might serve well as a sight for close and fast encounters (less than 100 yards).

Opinions?

I have Williams FP firesights on my 94 Marlin and I really like them. The semi buckhorns that came with the gun are useless to my old eyes. The gun may look a bit prettier stock but form follows function for me. BTW I have a 6x Leup on my 1895 guide gun and I like that even more. I think a red dot would be a great choice.

Default Burris Fastfire 111

I have several Fastfire 11 and 111. I like the 111 a little better as it is brightness adjustable. I have them on handguns. 22s and long rifles. You wont be disappointed. They make a world of difference for old tired eyes.

I bought a lever a few years back, about 10 minutes at the range confirmed my eyesight was not good enough for open sights anymore. I put a red dot on it, if I remember right I had to buy the mount at P&D, and it was actually for a pellet gun. A couple of little mods and it works fine.

I have played around with one on both my 45-70 and 30-30 marlins. My sight is a bushnell and has if I remember 10 or 12 brightness settings. I used it mounted for a couple of seasons and found it worked great in traditional bush hunting settings and I am good to about 200 yds with them.what I do not like is that even on the lowest setting the last 1/2 or so of legal light the dot is waaay too bright and make the red dot useless. I know they make versions where you can toggle to a green dot and it might make a bit of difference but I personally have not tried it. I did play around with a laser on my 45-70 for darker settings and it worked awesome but opposite the red dot in the brighter hours it was all but useless. I finally set on a 1-4 power scope with aluminated dot in the reticle that can be turned on and off to make use of the last few minutes of shooting light. In daylight though that red dot is sure fast on target.

Anything you can get a Weaver base on will support a red dot. This makes the Marlin's easy.

Hanging out with you guys is like being locked in a beer and wine store with a bunch of alcoholics. Encouragement is a given.

Well I ordered the FastFire III with the Marlin specific mount and this should arrive soon after Captaink sends me the JM stamped 1895 stainless I just bought from him.

Can't wait to try out the new toy, hopefully on a Grizzly this spring.
