.410 in close for coyotes?
Guys I've been considering taking a shotgun along with my 22-250 out for coyotes that come in close. I have had many chances at less than 10 yards. Anyone use a 410 instead of the 12 gauge? I can only find buckshot listed at "personal defence" in .410 and I have a box of winchester defence shot with copper discs and bb pellets. Anyone consider using this on a dog? I'm looking for a suggestion that would be ethical and effective.

I would use slugs myself, or 00buck if you can find it.

Personally I think it's too small for coyote hunting. Putting them down in traps would be a different story.

Slugs only in .410
If I had to use a .410 I would use slugs. You could ethically kill a coyote with .410 and slugs at close range. If I had a choice I would run 4 buck out of a 12 though.

Id say to small. 12 gauge with #2 or 00 buck would suffice.

I would say it is too small but if it's all you have, I'm sure 3" mag with 00 buck under 10 yards would work.

Slug
I will say if I had to use my 410 I would've used slugs.
My in close gun is a m92 in 357 mag

.410 is generally quite underrated and certainly can get the job done, especially so at the very close ranges you've mentioned, rmk800. While I would count myself in the .410 slug camp if I were to go .410 for Coyote, in that close your larger buckshot sizes should work just fine, likewise.
Get your gun and ammunition together at the range and see how your gun performs with the ammunition you'd like to use. If your comfortable and capable your equipment should not let you down.

Personally, I wouldn't use a .410. If they are that close, I would use a .22 or better yet, a .22 Mag.

I always thought you could also use 45 colt in break action 410's? I'm sure somebody on here knows if that would work, cause 45 colt would smoke em good.

That's an interesting idea that I would like to try but I might wait until someone confirms OK.

I have never seen a slug for a 410. If you can not find one I would not recommend using the 410. I have used a friends of mine with #2 shot and it had no hitting power at 30yds. If you don't want to lug the 12ga around take a 22 mag for close range.

Using slugs kinda defeats the purpose of taking a shotgun coyote hunting and a .410 with shot is just not effective and asking for wounded dogs ( and I am a big .410 fan my go to chicken gun ). 20g and up is very effective I carry a 12g shooting #4buck or Heavy Tshot works outstanding

I think that it is enough gun.
The info about 4 balls stacked on one another is correct. The pellets come out at over 1200 fps, and that is lots.
I reload and now use lil gun and the performance is impressive.
I have a Yildiz single shot, use 3" brass cases, and 13.6 grs. of Lil'gun and it works great, only 3.3 lbs to carry.
As far as slugs are concerned, I agree with the "why use a shotgun then" guys. If you only have one bullet there are better choices.

After a fair bit of ninja googling, it would appear at best to be a poor idea. My recommendation is don't Good luck with the dogs though.

410 ammo is three times as expensive a 12 gauge, at least in lead, and it doesn't have the spread or pattern density with the large shoot like 0 or 00 that you need for adequate penetration. If I were doing it I would use a 20 gauge over 22 RF or 22 WMR combo gun as the second gun. A 12 Gauge over 223 is also an option that is available and would make a great in close second gun.

I've taken them with a .17HMR, so it could be done, but just like the .17, far from ideal. In reality I think I'd probably pick a .17 over a .410 for close in dogs unless you could find slugs, which I've never seen.
I use a .223 bolt gun for them, and I take my Keltec sub2k in 9mm for really close in or putting down a wounded dog. It's heavier than your .410; close to 4.5 lbs. At 30 yds it hits a fair bit harder than a .357 mag from a revolver too.
I think I'd be sticking with a 12 ga. and 00 as well.

Thanks guys I have a 22250 for longer shots, but I was just curious about the 410 for tight shots. Slugs defeat the purpose. I also have the 12 gauge but the 410 is lighter and easier to hunt with.

Probably not the best choice but certainly capable.
A .410 000 buck round moves just as fast as a 12 guage load there is just way less shot but with a 3inch shell you have 5 9mm projectiles.
It dumps more energy into a target then most defensive pistol rounds at close ranges.
And i would certainly shoot a coyote at close range with a pistol if we were allowed to do so.

you said less than 10yds in your post, so yes i would use a .410 for that.

That's funny, I've seen them everywhere from Canadian Tire to Walmart to all sorts of gun specific shops from big-box to Ma&Pa... .410 slugs surely are available and are a much better choice in a smoothbore than handgun cartridge, in my estimation.
Did you pattern that borrowed gun with those #2 birdshot shells? It may just have not had enough pellets on target for the job at hand. Shotguns must be patterned, otherwise there is no way to tell what they're up to or even how/where the gun is actually shooting.

I would use a 410 under ten yards and slugs are available although buck shot would be just as effective at that range.
