It is my understanding the Membership crew is still processing 2014 renewals, so it is doubtful that any official count is available at this time. In late December, it was estimated there would be about 700 spots open on Jan 1st, so ... an application submitted now would stand a reasonable chance of success. Do not expect to find out if the app is successful until the end of Jan.

All renewals submitted by mid-Dec are "for sure" .... all renewals submitted by the end of Dec are "probably". ..... All renewals submitted after Dec 31 will be date stamped, and processed in the order received along with all the newbies.
Given the "estimate" of 700 available openings at the beginning of Jan, both renewal and newbie apps submitted to date have a reasonable chance of success. No way to know when the window will close untill all apps have been opened.

My friend was so determined to secure a membership, that he took time out from his New Year celebrations to submit his application via e-mail, at 12:03 on January 1. I wonder how many other applications were sent during the early hours on January 1?

I submitted my renewal in October, so the volunteers could process the renewals, before having to deal with all of the new applications.

It should be noted than when people call and email about the status of their membership, that takes processing time away from the membership volunteers pushing the progress back further.

I sent my renewal in back in October. I still have not heard anything back as of today. I am a little concerned that it takes so long.

I received an e-mail confirming the receipt of my renewal form, shortly after I sent it in.

Well since this is a club that is 100% run by volunteer efforts and both of you are unsatisfied, why don't you call the membership chair and volunteer some of your time to rectify the issue?
