Default Winchester Model 70

Any place in Edmonton or around Edmonton have these in stock?

Does Bass Pro in Calgary stock them?

I cant seem to find them anywhere. I remember when most stores would stock them now I cant seem to find one, what happened?

They've gotten rare. Everywhere is carrying the 783 and other budget rifles and fewer the Model 70. My wife picked on up on sale for me a few months ago - don't think they're discontinuing just focusing on the upper end of the market with the model 70. Might have to hunt if you want one in a plain composite stock.

I see that the Shawnessy Canadian has some of the Extreme Weather and Super Grade in stock. You might want to give them a call.

Thank you for the heads up guys, much appreciated. Is there a reason why they're so rare now?

There was a FWT high grade 30/06 on there that had about the best walnut I've seen on a 70, however, it appears to be one.

Shutting down production for a couple of years in the early 2000s didn't help.

Winchester is owned by the same company that owns Browning. It seems that the company focuses on promoting Browning.

I spoke with a person at the Browning/Winchester booth at the SCI show in Vegas this February. Asked why they don't promote Winchester as much as they do Browning. She claimed they did, yet the booth had plenty of Browning Abolt/Xbolt models, including some that are limited production, yet didn't have a complete showing of the Winchester models. It's the SCI show, and you don't have an example of the Extreme Weather SS or the Safari Express? Pathetic!

I don't know how much longer Winchester will continue to exist at this level of promotion.

Bottom line, Winchester Model 70s can be hard to source.

Well thats really sad to hear, hopefully they find a way to reinvent themselves. I am stuck between their model 70 or one of their lever action rifles, just would like to add a Winchester to my collection while i still can.

When Fabrique Nationale (FN) bought out Winchester, they knew that the machinery and tooling was well worn out. Besides there were union issues at the plant. Thus the need to shut down, re-organize in Utah with new tooling, machinery and non union employees and start making beautiful firearms once again.

in my opinion, a .30 bore is far too large for a Featherweight. I do like them, but I'd restrict my choice to a quarter bore.

The 30-06 in an M70 Featherweight is a great choice, I hunted with one for several years.

True , but the FN plant has always been in South Carolina. Browning's US Head Office has been in Morgan Utah for years.

Oh? I must be wrong then or dreaming. Because in my dreams when I grew up in Verviers Belgium, my dad would go to work at the Herstal facility as their tool & die maker. That was from 1955 to 1967. My bad, sorry.

I still remember my beautiful Winchester Model 70 chambered in 338 Win Mag.

Nice rifle, but it kicked like a mule. Ha.

I didn't have a long eye re-leaf scope, lots of folks that shot it including my self got scope eye.

My long time friend still has the rifle, and he found a scope that works for it.

I bought it new in 1985 if I re-call, about 200 rounds down the pipe before I was ready for the 375 H&H.

Had I been smart back then, I'd-a kept the Model 70 and passed on the H&H thing knowing what I know now.

Winchester made some pretty nice rifles that many of admire even today.

Don

Of course their original plants were in Belgium and some still are.

I think it'll be a very long time before a push feed, or New Haven Classic M70 becomes collectible,....unless it's NIB,....or a very rare chambering.

Totally agree, I've had several M70's, mostly featherweights. Great gun, but the sad fact is, a used T3 lite, will usually sell for more then a used M70.
