Default Ammo. What on earth do I have?

Was doing a little sighting in and practice yesterday and came across a bunch of loose rounds in my ammo cabinet. No box to be found. They are Federal Premium 30-06. Likely "Vital Shock" line as I don't buy the Power Shock. Look to me to be 165g. They have silver case, copper coloured bullet with black plastic tip. Any ideas? Thanks.

He doesn't appear to reload so likely doesn't have the skills/tools to pull one and determine the properties that would lead him to identification.

think it was Winchester that made a premium hunting bullet with nickel plated brass and a variety of bullets. As mentioned the black plastic tip does sound like Swift Sirocco. I have never been able to tell a seated bullet weight by looking at it. My 150 165 and 180 30-06 loads all seem to have the same amount of exposed bullet.

I agree that the black tip seems to indicate a Swift Scirocco bullet:

http://www.swiftbullets.com/products-s/1819.htm

The part that throws me off is you mentioning Federal Premium, now I don't know whether or not Federal Premium ever loaded the Scirocco but I personally have some factory Remington Premier .308 Win with 150 grain Scirocco's.

Drop one off with me and I will disassemble and reassemble after weighing the bullet if you would like. Figuring out if they are even available anymore would be the first thing I'd look at to see if that's even worth it.

haha sure. Though the last time I watched someone try to take apart a round (father of friend trying to teach us a lesson) he put the primer through his thumb. LOL

I know for sure I've never bought that round.

I don't have a vice but if you can grip case and bullet and twist with two pairs of pliers I can take the bullet out and look for whatever indicating mark you fellows think is there.

Mind you I didn't look that closely. I don't think it was the bullet. I just remember him showing us the hole and blood and saying "see what can happen when you play with ammunition?" Then seeing him upstairs cleaning it in the sink under running water, tears in his eyes. LOL Stopped me from every playing with live ammo. I was maybe 10 at the time.

Was the gentleman in question using an open flame perhaps to disassemble said cartridge?

How many are we talking about here? This sounds like a lot of work for some rounds you likely didn't want for some reason way back whenever.

Otherwise Swift Scirocco is the only bullet I can think of with a black polymer tip. I think some federal premium ammo was loaded with it but not the Vital Shock lineup. Maybe an old version of the Trophy Bonded Tip?

Now that I don't recall. Would seem an idiotic thing to do, but what did I know back then? And I did not question my elders. LOL

I seem to recall somebody on here a while back saying you can just wrap the cartridge in heavy leather, clamp it in a vice and set it off with a center punch to get the bullet out....

I assume he no longer has fingers to respond here.

First, what is the information on the head of the brass, since you don't trlaod that will be a great start. If it is Federal Nickel plated 30-06 Brass then the only thing it can be is Vital Trophy Cooper. IF you look real close my bet is the cooper bullet has a dark green tip that looks black.

Not sure how many cartridges are produced with the Scirocco but these ones have brass cases. Sciroccos have a pretty steep ogive while the Trophy Coppers are a bit rounder.

Then again, may be neither...

Why pull them apart and try to re-invent them? Use them for practise, to foul a clean barrel or to get you on paper before using your prefered ammo. And if they perform to satisfaction on paper, use them for hunting. Being that they are a hunting bullet, I'm sure that "they will kill" as Doug Marcaida (forged in fire) would say.
