Cougar Hunting
This is something that has interested me ever since I watched a show on it as a kid. Didn't really get serious about hunting until recently but I was wondering what the wonderful folks here on AO have for advice, or strategy or even recommendations on an outfitter to go with.
I'm talking about the Cat btw, not the 40 something single woman.

Wild&Free check out Cats of 2013 Thread on page 3 of this discussion. I have had an unbelievable week hunting with Kelly Morton. He would be an excellent choice for an outfitter in my opinion.

So anyone who does the early season cougar killing? have any advice? Or is it just sheer luck you come across one at this time and are able to take a poke at it?

If you're looking for a different type of cat hunt and a bit more of an adventure try hunting them on horseback.
Give Paul at Timberline Outfitters a call, I hunted with him one year for cats on horseback and it was pretty fun.

Ryry, that sounds like a blast. I'll definitely keep that in mind for sure. My dad's a road hunter so something like that would be an awesome experience. Though, not sure I'd be able to get the old man on a horse.

You do realize that without the aid of hounds its alot harder right? Pretty much drive the roads and cut a fresh track and let the hounds out and hopefully the kitty tree's fast so it cuts down on the walking...not alot of skill involved on the hunter's end its all the houndsmen and the dogs hunt.

Yes, I do realize it would be a lot harder to get a cat without hounds, hence the question if there are any tips or advice or if it's just sheer luck. I don't mind a challenge, I fish the Peace River.

Head out the morning after a fresh snowfall and search for a track. Find track. Follow track. Hope to eventually catch up to the cat.
I have done the same thing with numerous deer and elk, so it is possible. You just need to move fast enough to overtake the animal, but slow and quiet enough to not let it hear or see you.
