A farmer on a property that I used to shed hunt had a skull very similar to this hanging in his shop .. pretty rare I would think

It's called perruque deer, it usually happens to roe deer that have lost or injured their gonads, they never shed that thing either.

This usually happens when there is some kind of damage to head during the velvet stage or damage to the gonads resulting in variable testosterone levels

That's what I understand as well. Damage to gonads or artificial castration, usually by Predators. These "antlers" were very dense, about 30-40 lbs.as I recall, and are never shed.

The worst part of finding a shed like that is you'd spend the next year looking for the other side, which doesn't exist.

Wonder if this buck was from the same area?
