I learned something today.
Bumping up the screw size to 8x40 would not be a bad idea to do, but with the turn style rings like Leupold or Redfield the rings do not keep as solid a platform as the picatinny rings will do. "Weaver style" mounts would be another choice, by this I am meaning the higher quality 1s that have screws on each side of the ring, not the 1 sided screw rings.
With a picatinny rail you can spred your rings further apart to support the scope tube closer to the ocular and objective lens so the scope whip is reduced, which help keep reticle and erectors from being shaken loose as well.
