Army surplus enfields did them for 50 years. Now they need $4800 bolt action rifles for bear defense and hunting. Not one of those is ever going to be fired at a Russian. Army specifies anything, add millions to the price. I swear, if they decided to just give them bear spray the price would be $1200 per can.

well if the last rifle lasted them 50 years, assuming this one can do the same thats only 96$ year for the rifle as a system. Not horrible in my books.

Good idea on the wood stock,,, at least it will float if they drop it in the Ocean.
I heard rumors that Polar Bears fear wood since its un-comfortable to scratch on,,, not soft an fluffy like snow.
Surprised they didn't do the seal skin gun scavords since there water proof. Warm too cuddle up to at night too.

When's your gunsmith gonna get 6500 Tikka rifles made to spec?

I too agree that government dealings go way over board when it comes to costs.
We the people buy with in our own means and what we can afford, each too their own. Some folk can afford rifles that are much higher priced then the ranger rifle as other purchase frugal units.
"I'm in that category since I Smith my own builds too turn a rifle into the unit I want, frugal priced unit in the $400 ish range to end up with awesome hole puncher when done.
100% off the shelf frugal unit with my 20 or 50% change up too get things happening down range,,, well with in budget since I was lucky too keep all my optics from years ago.
The best fire arms I own are the ones I envy since they are bought and payed for with hard earned cash from my pocket,,," many folk I would guess would feel the same with the units they have too", or they/we wouldn't own them.
No envy in my world since I own less with options to use the little I have. Old cold steal attached to wood puts a Grin on me deep in side, no need for bling since its going to get dropped in the mud some where, frozen leaning against a tree, and baked in the sun on the Arizona desert.
Envy too me is not doing more traveling around the world, at least that is coming into play now that I have the nitch going.
Pal Don with the best I can afford, no $$$ toys in my world

I'm talking about getting a rifle built for myself not the rangers.
A private gunsmith would not be ale t do that kind of volume.
I like the new rifle but that is of no consequence.
ha matters is if it is liked by those who use it.
The Tikka /Sako comment was a bit of sarcasm BTW, actually like them.

What do you mean outright? Buy the entire company for the rangers?

I think they meant just buy factory off the shelf rifles instead of having one specifically designed for them.

Its a Sako. Doesnt matter who makes them. Its the pattern that matters. An M1 Garande was made by lots of manufacturers. They are all M1's. A machined part is a machined part regardless of what machine shop turns it. All of the material that Colt is doing the machining on is provided by Sako. Its a Sako.

The 1911's for example are all called 1911 Colts but they may be made by Colt, or Rand , singer , Nirinco , the list goes on .
Same as this Ranger designed rifle .
Colt may be making it but if is not a Colt design ,
As far license goes , it could be because of patent law , but I don't think that the people who know this for certain really care what a bunch of
Internet forum members think .

Maybe so but bergerboy has it backwards, its not the design of the gun in thiz case, its who makes it. If the gun had been a ruger it would still be prdtty good, colt canada would still be making it, and it would still cost 6000 dollars. Ruger declined to be in competition for it if they didnt make it themselves. So in that case as in this one it was absolutely important who made the gun. My point about the lipsey and legacy was that they could get a manf to make a version of the gun they wanted vanguard is another example. Sako is making that version anyway in the arctic and at a terrific markup still less than half the price
