Basically one is for a short action and the other a long. Ballistics are virtually identical in factory ammo. The Tikka is a great rifle for the $$$.

Default Wsm

The short action ,long action isn't a factor with the Tikka rifles as the actions are all the same lenth. Some folks think that due to the case design in the WSM that there is less felt recoil. Might be a factior in the light Tikka rifles? Factory ammo in the WSM can be fairly pricy with the premium bullets like Barnes X. I shot a Win 70 feather weight with ths round and didn't find it all that uncomfortable to shoot off the bench at the range. FS

Ballistics are very close short mag lends itself to compressed loads when using bullets larger than 180 which creates limits that the 300 wm is less effected by.
The short action is about 6 oz lighter which is nice to me recoil is comprable bettween the two.
I love the 300 win mag have shot it for 25 years but after buying my new 300wsm I have nothing but praise for it I thought long and hard between the 300 rum 300wm and 300wsm no regrets on the wsm

Point taken it is true you can buy cheapo ammo for the 300 in any CT or WM or general store but then some of us won't run chepo amo in our rifles and also plan ahead enough to have the amo we need. so availability meaningless
and I will bet that this cartridge is here for the long hall as I have said before Nosler has chosen this as a test cartridge for thier bullets and the first nosler custom rifle was the 300wsm this was based on the inherant accuracy of this cartridge like the 308 300 wm 6.5 x 55 some cartridges just have the right stuff others fade away or remain forever exclusive to one manufacturer.
