22-243?
Has anyone ever had one of these? I was just reading and interesting article about this cartridge and 80-90gr bullets. Sounds pretty amazing. From what I understand it is formed by simply necking down a 243. Energy at 500 yards was quite a bit more than a 25-06 and wind drift was way less. In fact drift was less than a 300wsm 180gr.

Im
just on the verge of building one......Reseaching bbl twists.....
Thinking either a 1:12 for up to 60gr, super flat shooting or 1:9 and go with the vld bullets
You just use a .22-243 die and resize the neck to .22, creates a 30 degree shoulder i do beielve creating a longer neck....
You can go .22-243 MIDDLESTEAD which is the 30 degree shoulder, or a .22-243 WINCHESTER which is just necked down, no change in shoulder.

Coool, I think. I've not shot this cartridge but since the .243 and the 22-250 both can be formed from .308 brass isn't this just a 22-250 reinvented? Or does it get the 100 fps extra that the swift does? I probably missed something here so please fill me in!

I had a friend that use to shoot one. It was either 1:12 or 1:14.
I think his was a 22-243 Ackley Improved. I could be dead wrong though.

I know that a .243 Win was derived from a .308 Win case?
Was a .22-250 Rem not derived from a .250 Savage?
If that's right then I think we are dealing with two different parent cases.
???

i find this round to be most interesting..but then again speed kills.
if it were legal here to use a 22 cal centerfire to hunt deer n stuff it would be most goodly
im sure i even seen premade cases for this too
accurate reloading has some data for this
a 257stw and a 22-243 in the safe would be a whole lot of velocity

I've made many, many 22-250 cartridges from any of the cases in the '06 and 308 family lineage. A quick run through the trim die and a turning of the inside of the neck and I had a strange collection of head stampings on my 22-250 brass. I made all my 270 and 25/06 brass the same way from 06 brass which I could pick up by the pail full at the range back in my younger days.

Hey guy's thanks for the info. My interest in this cartridge would be as a long range varmint/coyote gun. The articles I was reading was suggesting a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 twist rate for the heavier bullets up to 80gr. I think the main advantage of building one of these would be for the use of the heavy bullets. If you just wanted a fast 22 you could buy a 22-250 or 220 swift from the factory with twist rates meant to stabilize the light bullets. If your going to build a 22-243 then why not get a 1-7 or 1-8 twist and push a 80gr bullet at 3600-3700 ft/s. If I remember the charts right I believe that this combo at 500 yards was still carrying over 1000 ftlbs of energy and bullet drop was only 14/15 inches. Out here in the prairies who couldn't use a wind bucking cartridge combo like that. I will see if I can find the article and put up the actual stats. Thanks again for all the input. bradtothebone let me know how yours turns out and where you get the barrel?
