Question barrel length vs velocity question?

https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_ses...10ea593c0e033d (click on 'view ballistics' to see the velocity etc.)

If that link doesn't work...its for hornady ammo in 6.8 spc and says the 110 gr bullets doing 2550 fps out of a 16" test barrel. Does anyone know roughly what the increases might be for every two inches of additional length might be and where any extra length doesn't help anymore?

If i get into one of these customs in this caliber i'll have to pick a barrel length and need to try and find out the optimum length?

Here is a link to an article I found on barrels and it discusses your question as well.

Hope it helps.

Thanks, so by that read i'd be looking for 20-22"...i wonder if 24" would be of much benefit for this cartridge?

If yall were picking a barrel length for this cartridge what would your vote be? Its for a sporter build fyi...not a bush gun...regular bolt action centerfire applications for hunting in Alberta.

I prefer the 22" length over a 20". The rifles seem to balance better. If you want a good example in actual rifles, shoulder the Remington Model 7 (which is typically 20") and then try the Remington 700 Mtn. Rifle (22"). I don't think you'll see a lot of difference with the velocity between these two lengths....I'd be more concerned about how the rifle feels and balances.

Hey Stinky, I was looking at putting together a 30-06. SO don't know if this will help ya or not but this is what my info was based off of. From what I understand I think you gain about 30-40 FPS per inch of barrel. I asked a the gun-smith in Bently about Barrels and he said that with a 28" one I could actually start to loose Velosity. He sugested going 22". Said i could go 24" if i wanted, but he seemed to like the 22". Hopes this helps ya bit

I think i might go 22" for this rig also. I think it will still keep the gun pretty handy while getting velocity fairly high for the round...but some hours of the day i waffle back to 20" and a few minutes of the day go to 24" but pretty sure i'm gonna fall in between those two numbers for that cartridge. Thanks.
