Default Lake Trout

The only time I have ever fished for lake trout is in early June when they are not very deep and trolling for them without a downrigger has been very successful. I am heading back up north next week. My question is, in the fall when the weather is cooler, do the lake trout rise out of the depths of a lake or is a downrigger needed this time of year? Thanks.

The Lake Trout come up (late September in my experience) to spawn on shallow gravel shoals. This is the only other time of year that I have had success without a downrigger.

Where are you headed to?

Thanks Sneer. Not too sure where I am going. I have a fly-in moose trip booked for next week up north. Before we arrive they fly a boat and motor into our site. Location is not known or the name of the lake for that matter, might be an unnamed lake Plan is to hunt in the morning and night and during the day fish for some lakers or pike. Probably be no more than 100km from the nwt border in the NE part of the province

It doesn't matter what lure you use, as long as it's one of these.

OR a five of diamonds.
I had gone to the N.W.T. for about 7 years in a row a couple years back, and we found that the 2nd week of September the Lakers were starting to come up onto the gravel bars. By the 3rd week they were all up and biting big time.
Dodger.

Thanks Big Bull & Dodger. Already have the hooks in the picture..... and a few 5 of diamonds. We'll see what happens. Thanks for all your help on this trip big bull. Did you use one of those hooks when you caught that laker in the video I received?
