Pic up a bigger safe and decided to turn my old one into an ammo storage.Left room at the bottom for bulk but I might put in one more shelf .

X2 I had one of those safes then bought one of Costco safes, then turned the old into a lockable ammo storage!

Well I can see where all the 7mm-08 fusions have gone. Haha looks good. But.... Shouldn't an ammo container/safe be vented? Just askin...

I don't know 100%, but believe that the container should be vented in case of fire. For explosion purposes. Again not 100% but worth looking into. I think it keeps it from becoming a bomb.

I'm not sure either but it doesn't look air tight, I know mines not.

I would need a few of those to lock up all my ammo. I just use a small storage room with a locking door.

Good idea. How did you secure the shelves from the outside screw into the shelf itself or peg /post from the inside?

Default Safe

Venting not necessary if there's a fire it's going to vent itself

It's not a fancy job but the cabinet was dirt cheap when I bought it so I had no issue punching holes threw it. I might go and hunt down some big rivets to replace the bolts some time but probably not.

looks good and once again a good idea, may too someday have to follow your lead, but after looking at yours, I would turn the "L" brackets a 180 and turn the bolts around so the nut is on the inside. just would give it a more finished look, But hey, Thats just me...

Looks similar to what I had done. I placed a piece of board on either side of the cabinet and screwed the brackets to them so I did not have to drill into the cabinet.

Nice job converting it!

I have the same gun cabinet and it's definitely not airtight so even if that is a consideration in ammo storage, the point is moot.

I needed ammo storage too and bought the following from amazon.ca:

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B001...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For those of like me who grew up with standard measure and still tend to think/visualize in it the dimensions are: 38" x 18" x 22"

Some day I will likely need a larger gun cabinet and if/when that day arrives, I'll likely convert my existing cabinet to be ammo storage too!

Great idea, I have an extra cabinet like that as well, I think i might do a similar project. Just wondering in gun cabinets lots of guys put in humidity control, would it be worth doing it in an ammo locker as well that is not vented? Maybe the air here is dry enough anyway. Never hear of ammo going bad from hunidity alone but I have seen brass oxidize that has been stored a long time.

I had all my ammo in a locked tool box pretty much the same as the link you have there , it serves it's purpose but was crammed to the gills . Guys can pick up these lockers from Canadian tire sometimes for $80 on sale and it seems like they are always on sale haha.

I bought the double door 6' high cabinet with the locking checker plate doors from Canadian tire. You can store a ton of stuff in them.

I've also seen guys pick up used lockers at auctions and convert them to ammo/gun storage. Not as wide as the stack-on, but the price sure is right if you can find them.
