Default First Custom Rifle... Complete!

So I got the call from Dave Henry mid last week that my barrel was complete and ready for pick-up. I made my way out to Dave's place on Saturday morning to pick up the barreled action and start the rest of my install. Barrel started out as a 28" .284 medium contour 8.5 twist blank from Proof Research. I had it cut and crowned at 24" and chambered in .280 rem. Dave does beautiful work, work definitely recommend his services. The action was off a couple year old 30-06 ADL that I had laying around.

About a year ago, my dad decided to pick up a new 30-06 as we couldn't get his old one to shoot worth a damn anymore. I wanted to use the stock off his old hunting rifle to sort of carry on a legacy. He had hunted the past 30+ years with that rifle and taken plenty of critters with it...

I had to open up the barrel channel to accommodate the larger contour. I took some material down around the action as well and drilled out a few divets for the devcon to flow into.

I took a bit of advice from an old there where Dean and Dick had mentioned boring out the action screw holes to allow the bedding material to flow around the action screws and basically create a devcon pillar. This worked wonderfully.

After a bit of clean-up. This is my third time doing a full action bed job, so it might not be the prettiest (mainly at the rear of the action) but it certainly has 100% contact. I covered the barrel in a couple wraps of tape to allow for it to still be free floated then sanded a bit more bedding material out of the barrel channel.

I went with a triggertech primary single stage trigger (thanks Leigh) and I'm very happy with how it breaks.

Finally, I topped it off with a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 in a set of low 1 piece talley lightweight rings. Can't wait to shoot this sucker!

Looks good. I like your repurposing of the stock. Definitely adds to the character. I tip my hat.

What an awesome rifle you put together there. I really enjoy doing my own work from barrelled actions to a final rifle. Great job and let us know how it shoots!

Thanks guys. Really happy with how everything turned out.

I originally wanted to cerakote the barrel, action, and bottom metal, but Dave did such a nice job with the satin finish on the barrel that I decided to keep it as is. Just need to find matching bottom metal now...

Nice looking rig and classic chambering to boot! When I had a Remington 700 re barrelled in .30-06 8 years ago ppl looked at me like me like I’d lost my nut. I purchased a laminate stock for it not to long ago and like you had a discussion with Dean about his method of glassing pillars in it all came together pretty nicely.

Very nice indeed!
Im a big fan of wood furniture so that just adds the cool factor, especially with those checkering patterns.

So, I finally made it out to the range to break in the new rig.

I picked up a box of Hornady factory ammo, 150gr ELDX's. I load these in my wife's 7mm-08 and we've had pretty good results. I'll probably try these out over some H4350 since I have quite a few lying around.

Cleaned between shots as per the manufacturers break in... First couple 3 shot groups looked really nice.

I had a couple 5 shot groups that I was really happy with, especially for factory ammo. I think I can really dial this sucker in. It'll probably shoot better than I can, ha!

I have ATRS making me a modified once fired case at the moment to start screwing around with CBTO. Very happy with this rifle though.
