Could you narrow down where you are thinking of camping.
I'm partial to Moab Utah myself...doubt if you want to travel that far
But seriously...it's a big province, you willing to drive anywhere?

I was looking for a spot this morning myself. I'm heading to the southern part of the province though.

If you don't want to drive to Elk Point then have a look at Lessard Lake Public Campground about an hour from the city, been there decent place, if your tenting it take a spot in the bush area its for tenting.

Long Island lake is nice and Pembina River is great for kids. Both can be booked online in advance.

Look up the areas south of Athabasca and to the southwest. Some good private campgrounds in that area

I've never found a nice online map of Public Land Use Zones (PLUZ) but the gov't of Alberta site has this page broken down by area.

Default Add to travel time

Seems that one hour from city does not provide really good non campground camping spots, My average travel time is usually 2 to 2.5 hrs either west or north and have found some great and private spots....I like to do night time observing with telescopes as well as day time scouting.... I personally hate having to book campgrounds and be packed in like sardines , Alberta is fantastic for boondocking camping.
