Savage barrel swap
Has anyone done a barrel swap on a savage around Lethbridge? I am trying to find a barrel nut wrench and maybe someone who could give me some pointers.

In your opinion is it something that someone with no experience should attempt alone? I am trying to track down a barrel nut and the wrench as mine has the smooth nut which I'm told can't be reused.

Do you have go and no-go gauges? Do you know how to measure headspace? If not....it is not a job you want to go at alone.

The smooth nits can be reused if you have the right wrench. The smooth nut wrench is expensive so most guys use a pipe wrench and replace the nut.
When I did my first one I had no experience either. As long as you understand what headspace is and how to check it you'll be fine.

I think at this point I am just going to have a gunsmith do it. I haven't been able to find anyone local that could walk me through it. Thanks for the info and advice.

I am in Medicine Hat, and I could help you. I work on the road and am only home every two weeks. I don't mind.

PM me and we'll get the details worked out. I have quite a few gauges.

The guy carries little to no inventory. He takes 100% of his customer's money upfront, and then puts in a mass order to brownells, Hirsch precision, shilen, kreiger, or McGowan. He then uses his customer's money to fund his own hobby. I've ordered from him before, he leads you into believing he has the item, then sends you an invoice and request for emt. Order your own items from brownells or support retailers who have invested in an actual business with inventory.

Last barrel I ordered was in stock with him. Same with my last S111. I agree some stuff takes awhile but good luck finding it anywhere else either. Jerry has always been A1 to deal with.

i just happened to be talking to a guy about rebarreling a savage action yesterday..........he kinda thinks he's a gunsmith, so i asked him about headspace. his answer was...."u just put an empty brass (trimmed to right length) in the action and screw the barrel in until it touches. then u back it off 1/16 of a turn and its done" what do u gun guys think about that? sounds a little rough to me, but i'm not a gunsmith.

There is a procedure and it isnt a 1/16 turn back ! . I had Mystic remove my barrel and fit the new one I have no problem with doing it but if its tighter than normal I didn't want to turn it into a make work project and for the $60 it isn't going to break me . Now that its been swapped and gauges and wrench supplied I am ready to go any direction I want already turned it into a 22,250 for winter so the 270 win barrel gets put away for fall it feeds no problems in a long action 110 lh

savage headspace
IMHO, Proper head-space GO gauges are a cheap investment, (~$25)
one gauge will measure .243, 7-08, 308, .358 and most 08W based.
a second gauge will measure most 06 based.
Best used as a standard in combination with a
digital caliper (CambodianTire on sale <$20)
Hornady head-space comparator (~$30) and a
Hornady bullet ogive bushing (~$5)
These tools will measure fire-formed, re-sized and factory cases and shoulder bump as well as case length and accurate bullet seating depth.
Many gunsmiths prefer to use a GO gauge and varying thicknesses of tape to measure actual head-space and do not use NO-GO or Field gages.
There is LOTS of 'how to' information on the net, Google 'Savage barrel installation and head-spacing'.
