Default Poll winter elk tactic

heading out tomorrow and friday to get a cow. the rancher has said about 100 head are eating his horses hay righ outside the house at night. my question is, where will i best find them come daylight? I've seen them up on the big hill before when its real cold, hanging on the south side in the sun. tomorrow will be around 5-7 degrees, so not sure if they will be sunning on the south side of a hill or not.

1. They stay lower elevation and head into thicker cover?
2. They go up the big hill and hang around the top in the sun?

how far back will they be? 1/2 mile?

Park truck before light, watch hay bales and field. Change plans accordingly when light breaks

If you know their route, you can always get between them and their return path to their day time hide out.

Good luck, sounds like they wont be too far.

Glass em.
They’ll visit the bales at night... you might be able to catch them at first light...

But the snow is your friend because they’ll show you the travel habits.

Super cold with sun... they’ll be high sunning themselves.
Or... they’ll be grazing on the wind blown bald spots.

Windy or pressured.... they’ll hole up in the thick nasties and wait for darkness and snack time.

Glassing will answer your questions.
