Keho Ice

When I arrived at Keho this morning, a group of guys had taken their truck on the Polar Bear Plunge, right off the boat launch. Fortunately, the occupants were out and OK, but it took the recovery crew about 2 and a half hours to get it out. People were driving around on the West end of the lake, but around the boat launch, there was a max. of about 12" of good ice, and the water had apparently been open in one area just a few days ago.

Don't forget to check the ice!

Be cautious on the lakes in Southern Alberta. There were open spots on most lakes last week, including some lakes guys are saying didn't melt at all/ are perfectly safe (Stafford as an example had roosting waterfowl, as did some of the smaller pike sloughs in that area). I know we measured as little as 6'' on lakes in the mountains and foothills last week, not even close to normal for the lakes out west. Be cautious along shorelines even out west, i watched a guy breakthrough on foot on a popular trout lake Sunday as he figured staying close to shore was safest. Use your heads and assume marginal ice conditions for the next bit!

If that forecast holds true, I'll take my canoe next time! I have the feeling it's on the optimistic side, though.

That would be why I did not go fishing this weekend. Last weekend there were some spots starting to open and we hadn't even had the warmest days yet. Then it gets cold and snows again and you cant see the ice to know how thick it is. I was scared I may go through walking on.

Its still survival of the fittest out there!
