First depends how cold out it is. When I didn't have a shack, I would setup my chair next to the truck, kept most of the wind off. But if it is say -20 or colder with a 20kmh wind, I wouldn't go, but maybe I'm just a baby...

There are some windchill charts online, they take into account the wind speed and temperature and calculate how cold it feels outside, this should help you.

Yah it starts getting really sketchy without shelter at -20C and below unless you're the hot blooded type lol. Can be done and even colder than that but the fun meter starts to go way down and simple things like retying your line with unprotected fingers becomes difficult. The only cure for any of this of course would be the if the fish were on an epic slamfest, wouldn't feel a thing then !!!

Put me in the "baby" section also. Really don't like it when it's minus 10-15 or worse. If a big wind starts to blow, it can be brutal.

-20 with a 20km/h wind.......I'd rather be working!
Not fun at all, holes fill with snow, lines freeze. Just not enjoyable without a shelter. Even -10 with a wind can be crappy. Getting in behind a truck or hunkered in a chair will helps but pretty much limits your mobility.

Get a set ot bibs and protect the small of your back. protect any exposed skin really and keep your hands and feet dry.
I dislike the cold myself, but have waded rivers in -27 with a 10-15k wind before for 1 steelhead in 6 hours.

Been there and done that, hide/fish beside the truck to break wind when it's -10 or colder. Tough to fish when your lines and holes keep freezing and snow blowing in. Hard on any fish you don't keep as you have to be quick with the release and get it back in the hole.

The easyest thing to do so that you know personaly is, go sit on a pail in your back yard at dif temps and winds for an hour reading a book. You will know what its like after only 2 - 3 times out there. I,m sure if you pick a day when the temp is -10 or colder and 20 gusting to 40 winds is that one time all you will need to judge for your self what your tolorance is.
It can be -15 and no wind, I'm good. If there is a 10k wind or more, for me it's a no go. Need the tent for sure.

X2 on what Kim473 suggests. In addition, should you decide to fish in freezing temperatures, be sure to rig up a metal coffee can with briquettes to keep your hole ice free. One more thing, don't forget to take advantage of hand and foot warmers, some guys put them even in their front pockets
