The fact there are no actual 0.23 cal cartridges, is likely why that distinction was chosen. There is virtually zero ambiguity in the cut off line that way.

For all intensive purposes big game cartridges begin at 0.243" or 6mm.

FWIW the closest contender, but still short of the magic .23" is the .22 Hi-Power, which has a nominal bullet diameter of 0.227".

Default .23

Just picked up a .223 for my 12 year old. He has the ability to shoot the rifle accuratly ( next years whitetail ). I red the regs and it said min caliber was .23. I was just asking was .223 actually .23. But apparently not.

decimal. 23

is greater than decimal. 22 or .223 or .224 or .225 etc.

This is for Alberta. Some other areas allow .223 for deer hunting.

Keep the 223 for a predator and pick up your son a 243. For the $$$, the Savages are great shooters. I picked up a 243 youth model a few years back for one of my nephews (now turned 16) and just recently one for his younger brother (his dad wanted) for XMAS. Both were camo-one in MOBU the other in BRUSH- kids love it. Then you are set to go. My oldest nephew took his first bull elk this season-a sweet 5pt with about a 120yrd - 2 shot with 95gr BST's.

Keep practicing shooting skills with the 223 as ammo is fairly cheap.

Is .220 (22 calibre) bigger than .230 (regulation minimum)? Not alot of grey area there...

Default .23 caliber ?

There are some parts of the regs that are not easily understood by a person that is new to hunting. This can be a good place to ask questions that concern you. I think your question has been answered. Hope you and your son have many fun and safe adventures.

there are in fact some .23 calibre chamberings available to todays rifle men and woman, they are however available only in custom rifles which will be a much larger price tag than anything you find at wholesale or cabelas

This, ^^^^^^

My son who is now 15, has been shooting the .243 in a savage youth for a couple of years, from deer, to moose, to yotes. A great gun, yesterday went to Cabellas yesterday and took advantage of the sale and upgraded to a 30.06 in a remmington

IMHO, a .243 in a youth is a great gun, and very affordable. I just sold it to the BIL for my nephew who is now old enough to hunt. Cant go wrong...
