Default Spray lakes fishing

Going to fish spray this weekend and camp if it's nice....I presume the ice has melted? I'm gunna do the old place right and smelt.....

How is the fishing early in the season there? I hear fall is slow....but I dunno

Also is it possible to catch whitefish from shore? If so how would I do that?

Tnx

Happy

if you want whitefish try small shiny flies (wire worms, chromies) under a bobber with no bait or a small ice fishing jig with a smelt on it

If you are up early you will see the whites rising. Great time if you are into fly fishing and a ton of fun to catch.

Well....went out.....perfect weather.....water was low so went to a point as it was quite steep where I normally fish.
Casted....had a quick bite and got snagged.......then BAM snapped my rod!!!!

I rigged the rod so it would still work and went back to a spot I fished once years ago.....it was steep getting to the shore with the loose gravel.....and was able to cast......

From 1015 to 1130 caught 4!!!!!

Marinating them whole right now....smoker tommorrow!!!

I'll let u know how they turned out

Hello all, I use a royal coachman tipped with a few maggots that is tied 1 foot above my jig head and 1/2 smelt. This is the best hook for catching whitefish in Spray. The best part about using the coachman is that when the fish are picky they nail the fly instead of the jig. Caught my biggest laker there to on the coachman. Give it a try you will be amazed!!

cheers
Goose

Wow goose.....do u think I have a chance to catch a white from the shore using this method? Like just a weight then hook with smelt....then 12" above a couchman tipped with maggots might catch a white?

Wow....I will owe u one if it works....

Tnx

flat tippet all the way to the fly line, tapered leaders aren't really necessary for chironomid fishing. Swivel 20" up from the fly for a little weight, and an indicator above that at the appropriate depth.

I usually just use 6 or 8lb fluoro. Try a red and black chironomid

Was there again today....didn't look at the boat launch.
My smoked trout I think turned out good. I smoked them whole......wife ate them. I tried the royal coachman with maggots.....didn't get a white today......but still caught 3 Lakers.....
