Mossberg is a OK gun..............but there are better choices. spend about 200-250 more dollars and get something way better. Marlins xl7 is a good choice.

Can i ask why you traded, other than savage is better than mossberg. Was the bolt sticky, bad finish, not accurate, etc

i shot one of these and found the recoil not very nice with the skeletonized stock was alittle more than i cared for also something about the bolt locking into the barrel instead of the reciever most ppl dont like not many places will even carry these guns in stock around here

I was told that the barrel on these guns were press fitted as opposed to threaded in... translation it has a limited number of rounds it will fire then it is no good and you should throw it away, the larger the round the smaller number it will fire before wearing out completely.
this is second hand info though

NO they are threaded barrels with a lock nut/barrel nut similar to a savage, the barrels are button rifled similar to a savage, the newer lightning trigger is similar to a savage. For some people they have little to offer , my eyes were opened some what when my Bil won one a mossberg 300 win mag with the lam stock that he won at Ashmont buck of the year. He was going to trade it sell it whatever cause it was a mossy. I said well hell we have to shoot it, I mean 10 or 12 rounds down the barrel do not depreciate a rifle. I mounted a cheap scope, resized some brass and thru a load togather from RL-19 and hrndy 180 interlocks, cci 250 primers. We went to the outlaws for Xmas and put it on paper in 3 rounds backed up to 100 yrds and the BIL had 2 sub moa groups and the last group had 2 touching and one a 1/4" of for a 3/8 group. This is from a rifle that many would never consider looking at, like I said opened my eyes. Well I am sure we would all love to own customs with scopes I could pay my mortage with ,the reality is these lower budget rifles will put meat in the freezer. In a pinch I'd take that rifle and the 200$ scope hunting tomarrow if I had to. Oh and he is having second thoughts on trading or selling it.

i think thats the whole idea of the 4x4 is so you can interchange barrels to differant calibers isnt it? not really sure on this.

300 bucks at wholesale sports for a 4x4 synthetic blued wood is $419
actually the reviews on it ( not bad atall) are alot better than the 770 remington ouch remington took a beating there so your right all in all to fill your freezer on a budget it would work just fine.......personally would look at some of the savages they have good price and seems to hold better reviews than they used too.

The Mossy's aren't bad for what they are...
They can shoot better than most people give them credit...
The 4x4 are uglier than hell IMO, but they shoulder really well and feel very natural.
In a pinch or even just because they would make a good economy hunting rifle.
The ATR's... again not bad, but not great.

This is and interesting take on the new hunting market, economical guns that will shoot will rifles almost if not more than twice their price, I am just not sure about quality and long term durability but for $400 if you can get a few years if not more of wear then it would seem to be a decent investment.

I don't know what you call ugly but IMO this is a pretty nice looking rifle.

In your opinion it is a nice looking rifle, in my opinion it is uglier than hell, especially the skeletonized stock version.

They shoot well, and you obviously like yours, does what I think about your rifle really affect anything? Are you going to run home and sell your rifle because Jim-Bo on the outdoorsmen forum called it ugly?

It certainly does not have traditional european or american lines, but it does shoulder well and fits nicely and feel natural, which is something I mentioned in my previous post.

Enjoy your rifle.

My friend has a 4X4 in 270 and it is deadly. I think it would make a great starter gun.

Couldn't agree more, the skeletonized ones are FUGLY.

The OP asked for opinions, and I happened to disagree with yours and stated that it was my opinion that they are nice looking. No biggie. I can respect that the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Childish banter...was that really necessary?

I will, thank-you. Hopefully it refills my freezer this fall and I hope the same for you.

I was asked by a friend to work up a 30/06 load for him in his rifle. He hands me his rifle and says "Be careful when you are shooting. The recoil is pretty heavy and if you have the forestock on bags it will rip the front stud out again." ??? 30/06 with heavy recoil?

Well anyway I worked up some 165 grain TSX test loads and hit the range. I put the rifle on my bipod to avoid tearing off the stud and starting shooting. After tinkering with things thru several range trips I was frustrated. This is the first time I haven't been able to achieve MOA with my handloads. The best group I could get was 1 1/2".

I went to the owner and showed him and he was ecstatic! He said he was only able to get groups a little bigger than a softball with any factory ammo he tried so that was a huge improvement.

The stud in the front has been knocked out twice now and I think some of the accuracy issues is the skeletonized stock. It is the flimsiest thing I have ever seen on a rifle. I was able to twist the rifle severely while it was on the bipod with very little pressure from my pinkie finger on the end of the barrel. The whole thing feels like a toy. Not a Tonka toy either. A cheapy chinese knock off.

The recoil was substantial also. I have owned a 30/06 and I shoot hundreds of heavy 7 Rem Mag rounds each year so the recoil from a 30/06 shouldn't be noticeable but it was. It was borderline excessive actually.

So that's my story. Take it for what it's worth. I wouldn't own one of these unless I was dead azz broke and couldn't afford a 770. Believe me that is saying something as I hate that thing also.
