I have taken approximately 260 big game animals so far in my life. Only two were beyond 600 metres. The first was as a kid, because I screwed up a really close range shot and could not get on the deer again due to dead ground. The second was an intentional long shot with almost no wind, a known range, and lots of practice with my gear. Other than those two animals, maybe 50 or so at 300-400 metres and the majority between 25 and 200 metres.

ya i don't even qualify for this poll though i've been building my rigs to their potential for a long time, killed lots of paper and steel in those ranges but the goal is be efficient with what i'm carrying, if it's capable to a certain distance i like to know i could, i don't like walking around with a half set up rifle, or bow
most of my big game stuff happens with a bow but i'd definitely qualify there as i've got a lot of kills over 50 yards with that tackle and i'm sure that would be the 500 yrd equivalent
longest big game was a first year doe (read fawn) at 521 lasered and dialed, bang flop, longest coyote 620, lasered and dialed, also down on the spot
99% of mine land under 300, the occasional just over
coyotes i'll range and dial them whenever they hang up, tough targets after 400 imo

Absolutely hate this " long range" crap!
Save it for targets!!
You NEED a expensive rangefinder to even begin the process.
Most don't. Guessing over 300 yards is almost imppossible and 25 yard miscue ain't cool!

Well, let’s assume that most shooting beyond 350 yds are using one of thes expensive range finders.

Long Range
B & C record book considering not accepting long range animals as they consider it sniping and not "Fair Chase Hunting"

So shooting a deer from a box blind eating corn is noble, yet shooting an elk 500 yds away across a canyon 10 miles from the nearest road is abhorrent? This world needs to quit posturing fake goodness.

So, you're saying a 200$ range finder will pick up a deer at 600 yards?
Been around many and ain't seen one yet that can!

I prefer, 200m or less, however sum species of big game, are much more likely to require longer shots, due to terrain, ie Mountian game.
My last two big game animals were Bull Thar, due to a wind change (detection) and very steep terrain, I shot the first at 390m, second a bit further say 420 ish, much further than I had hoped for, but had closed in from 800m, from below. Was hoping to get inside of 300m,
I shoot as close as possiable, conditions beyond my control, ie terrain, animal sense, detection, dictate the distance, boils down to weather, I think, I have the right tool and ability to get a clean humane shot.

And just how far does the B&C consider " long range"??
250 with an open sighted model 94 in 30/30 is VERY long in my books even with a very competent shooter behind the gun, but not with a 300 mag with the same shooter..
As was stated baiting is allowed in some areas and not others, so the waters of the ethics thing are becoming very muddied .

My farthest shot was 270 yards (as determined by the rangefinder after the shot).
I was actually surprised, as I didn't think it was that far, but there was dead ground in between and the gully was wider than I believed. Lesson learned.
Everything else has been 100 yards or less.

I spend more time at a range and shooting than most. For many people 150 yards should be considered their cutoff. But I also know guys that can consistently put rounds where they need to be much much further. I see comments about "bench shooting not being hunting" of course its not, I havent seen to many concrete benches and SEB rests in the field, but the fact that is pointed out shows what the person understands of the long range practice and what some people do to prepare for the way they hunt.
There are some guys that shoot at least one day a week, practice from field positions, and even practice shooting in their hunting locations in the spring/summer. To think that xxx yards is unethical to someone who practices year round to perfect something would be foolish.

Im not a longe range hunter, but like to shoot steel way out there, but have to ask this.
What about the close range hunters that like to take running shots on game ?
Is there an exact metod for that ? most I have seen try it either gut shoot or hit the animal in the ass, sure some can make a good running shot just like some are deadly at longe ranges. Then others suffer from severe buck fever and cant hit hit the broad side of a barn when excited , what should there be thier max hunting range be ?

<3%long shots
Almost 40 years hunting behind me now,I've shot at exactly TWO animals past 300 yards, both WT,smoked em both in the heart/lungs,one was a paced off 315y,the other GPS'd at 340m +/- 7m accuracy?(380yards??)
Probly 1/2 a dozen more between 200-300,a dozen or so from 100-200,and several dozen with bows, rifles, shotgun and MLs from literally point blank under a tree stand to 100.
I've never even been tempted to shoot at anything farther, nor have I verified trajectories nor worked on the skills required to shoot farther.I've never owned nor even used a range finder, but I'm pretty confident in my ability to guesstimate 300 yards give er take and that's all I've ever needed, hold on hair not air for anything out to 300,other then that one longest WT I gave him about 6" hold over spine.
All that said n done,I've got no issue with those that have the skillsets required to CONSISTENTLY make FIRST ROUND SUB MOA HITS taking 7,8,900+ yard shots,"walking it in" with elevation and windage corrections is not acceptable nor ethical IMO.
My only concern is that there are a lot of wannabe snipers out there that only think they are good.On the other hand, lotsa guys out there have no bizness shooting beyond 30y with a bow and think they can shoot 60,and many more again that dust off their rifle on opening day shooting from the same 6 year old 20 round box of ammo that probly haven't checked a zero in years and do well to hit a moose at 100y broadside,soooooo.....who's to judge?

I believe that the thinking there is flawed, because as was stated earlier, some cannot shoot decently at short range, but it would be okay too enter a deer into thee books that took multiple hits at say, 75 or 1000 yards, but disqualify a kill IF the hunter was truthful and said they killed it with one shot at 1,015 yards?
Not that I care one bit what the B&C or P&Y clubs think these days, the whole reasoning that they were formed seems to have gone off the rails as far as honoring the animal and putting the m first not the hunter. That is just my opinion however and it doesn't count for anything either.

Anyone who has actually shot at ranges like that knows how much their bullet drops and how exact the distance needs to be to what you’re shooting for or you will miss.

So far we have 103 hunters, minimum 257 dead critters. A full 1/3 greater than 650 yards!!
These guys taking their long range 14 lb rigs hunting or they pulling these miracles with the Enfield??
