Default Winter Fly-Fishing: Favorite Fly

Hey everyone,

What are some of your favorite winter fly's to use when you're out on the freezing waters, braving the cold?

Personally, I stick to nymphs. I find that most bead head nymphs will draw some attention when I'm out over the winter months.

What about you?

Depends on the timing, there will be BWO hatches coming along with the winter stones that can offer some good dry fly opportunities. The ever present Midge Emergers, Caddis Larva and small dark stones. Instead of fishing "a fly". Flip stones and match what you find.

I cant speak of the bow. I have encountered them all winter on other waters. Temps ime affect the sz of the flies temps 10ºc or above for two or more days will bring larger sz14 out if temps fluctuate alot I have come across sz18 and smaller. The smallest feeder stream mouths seem ime to be where fish respond best. Long casts with only the leader over watrr has been my best approach.

I fish hatches sporadically from late February to May. They tend to hatch during the Chinook cycles. I've had days where the snow banks look like soot covered with them.
