what cartridge for 30-06 bull moose?
i have hunted deer for last few years with a 30-06 with 165 grain ammunition and been happy with it. this year i also got my first bull moose draw.
Is 165 grain too light for bull moose? I know it comes to shot placement as well but if i am lucky enough to get a shot i don't want to risk not dropping a big moose.
also if hunting an area that can have both deer and moose you are looking for does anyone carry different weight ammo? i know you would have to sight in for a certain load and then maybe have some type of adjustment in your head? or am I out to lunch here?
if you have read this far - when is the moose rut?

If you like it, use it. the next 50 posts will tell you 165 is more than sufficient. I asked the same question about 150g out of a .270 on elk and got the same answer.

165 is optimal for the venerable '06. I wouldn't change a thing, moose are big but not hard to put down. Just make sure you put it in the right spot and you'll be King of the Grill.
Edit: how rude of me....best of luck on your first moose.

Tons of people use 165 gr in 30 06 and 308 for moose. Fill your boots.
Where will you be hunting?

Moose rut generaly speaking mid-September, but weather can be a huge factor. Kinda like asking "when are YOU horny"?

Used 130gr TSX (sorry git, lol) on my moose 2 years ago. Shot was broadside at about 100 yards. Moose spun and went about 25 yards and laid down to die. I put another in him but didn't really need to.
Unless I have a different rifle in a couple years i will be using 165gr bullets out of my 308 when I get my next moose draw.
As far as the rut goes we see a fair bit of rut activity in the first week of October.
Congrats on your draw an good luck. Make sure those 165's are shooting straight and practice your calling. Moose calling is a lot of fun!

Bullet placement is everything. If you are comfortable shooting a certain rifle and can hit what you shoot at, make a hole in the right place and they don't go far. I have a 25 calibre rifle, similar to a 25/06. I bought it for coyotes but I have killed lots of deer with it and believe it or not 13 elk and one moose. My buddy calls it my pop gun, but I have more in the freezer than he does.

In the past 20 years I have harvested approx 75 big game animals from antelope to B&C Moose, and about 70 of them have been with a 30-06 165 grain BTSP bullets. Most were 1 shot kills.
First week of October has brought excellent results for the Moose rut.
