Default 7600 Pump

Hi Folks, I'm looking for a new rifle for my son. Sam is 14 and left handed and I would like an all around gun for him and I'd like to use it as back up gun or brush gun. Actually Sam got a Marlin 30 30 but he would like more power for longer range shooting and more accuracy. We mostly hunt deer and still trying for elk. I have another son (11) also lefty coming hunting soon(he'll get the 30 30). I'm wondering what you guys think of that pump action as multi purpose gun for (right or left handed) in caliber 30 06 or 308.
Thanks.
Eric.

Default 7600-760

I have two of them in 270, they are great for left or right. My brother also has one in 270 he is a south paw and loves his. I have had one of mine for going on 20 years and never had a problem, the other one i inherited from my grandfather ,and has never had a problem with it either.

I have never owned one personally, but have several friends who do. They are surprisingly accurate and quite reliable. Do you reload , or buy your ammo. If you reload you will likely need to get a small base size die.

There is a nice one for sale in the buy and sell. 300 Savage is perfect for a young shooter.

Seriously though, I have a 30-06 7600 and it gives you a fairly solid kick. My son (lefty also) has no problems with his 30-06 in a 700 but is not very fond of shooting the 7600. I don't know if they are availiable with a recoil pad or not, but mine didn't come with one. I would think a young shooter would be more comfortable with a 308 or similar.

They are an awesome rifle and as accurate as any bolt as far as out of the box goes.

Your absolutely right on the felt recoil. I remember shooting a few in 30-06, the stock is very close to the 870 pump shot gun in drop etc. It was a mean kickin SOB and my one pal layed his eye brow open 2 times with his . ( crappy scope didn't help )

I have a 760 in 30-06 and like it. My father in law is south handed and says the safety is awkward to him. I have a limbsaver on it and it helps a lot. Another thing I did was remove the cheap scope and put on a Leupold. that helped with my flinch because of the better eye relief. I have not shot another 30-06 but i have to admit this 760 is about as much recoil as I can handle. Seems to be quite a bit harder than my 870 12 gauge.

I like the action although i find i have to full length re size or it will not feed properly. Also I can tell you from experience get a spare magazine because it is very slow to feed single shells if you lose the magazine.

The newer ones are nice and slim, some of the old ones were crude and bulky. There is a huge difference in quality from my grandpa's to my uncles.

Thanks a lot guys for the info. With that said, I think I'll go for a bolt lefty in Tikka or Savage.
Eric.
