X 3 for SCARS, not to discount the fabulous stollery or childrens hospital, stellar choice but they do have millions of dollars of fund raising, be nice for a small group such as ours to have a bigger impact. Most of us being animal luvers, this would be a good fit and would have a real impact, just my penny and a half....

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society, or SCARS, where I adopted my two dogs from would benefit greatly from a charitable donation.
Alot of time and effort is put into these animals and the place is run by volunteers as I understand it.
Maybe we can help out our 4 legged friends this year.

Not to discount the kids charities and what not, because the Stollery is one of the foremost places in the world to receive care for kids, but there are fundraisers every where and all the time for kids.
What about helping with male cancer, like testicular, or female for ovarian.
Just thinking that Breast cancer gets enough donation, and some of the other less talked about and less marketable cancers, such as colon dont get alot of love. They still affect millions of people, but its not as easy to advertise for Colons as it is to put a nice set of breasts or nuts on a billboard.
Just trying to think outside the box.
How about a fundraiser for a seniors home that is in disrepair.
Our seniors in this country are treated a fair bit worse than our prisoners and not much is done for them.
Something to think about.

Any other ideas, or are we done and heading to the polls?

You can't go wrong with any of the ideas previously mentioned. charity is always appreciated. I personally like the wounded warriors or animal shelter ideas, the both get over looked a lot.

I vote for something Like The Salvation Army as they are Everywhere in Alberta not just Edmonton and Calgary. They can use the help I am sure and at least if a person went there that was down on their luck they will give you a bed and a bowl a soup.
I remember years ago they even used to go from table to table in the bars to make money and I wouldnt go out if I Didnt at least have a $20 for them...

If a child is burned in the Calgary area, they are stabilized at the Foothills but are eventually moved for long-term care to ACH's burn ward.
There is another reason why the ACH burn ward needs help but I won't post it publicly as I am personaly embarrased by this fact.

I also believe that AHEIA would make the best choice.
It's what we are all about. We as a group should be proud to support them. They are the people responsible for getting kids out in the field. It's through them our kids will continue to hunt and fish. They run that massive program on the basis of donations and donated time.
It's a extremely top shelf group, one that deserves and needs our support.
Thanks
Jamie

It would be nice to find a disabled kid who's family cannot afford a special wheelchair to make life easier for them, or somethign along those lines.

I like the make a wish foundation. Billions go into science and research to help people fight illnesses. I like the idea of a little money going towards people, who won't get to beat their disease, living a dream.

Lots of great ideas, just wondering what charities were sponsored the first two years?
I'd like to suggest Little Warriors, as stats are showing 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys are being sexually abused!
Not sure if a national organization is what you're after, but looks like the majority of work is done in Alberta and it's based out of Edmonton.
Thanks,
GM

Good ideas guys.
I do hope that everyone that gives their opinion will still give to the chosen charity once the thread starts, even if it is not the one you picked.
I will be.

I think it will be a success regardless of what charity is chosen.
And once we get a poll (and a winner) you might find that enough is raised to support not only the winner, but also the second or third place finisher.
Wouldn't that be sweet?

There is no doubt that this is an invaluable opportunity and that some charity is going to benefit. We are involved with several charities here and the feedback is tremendously rewarding.
However, one point that I would make is that the relative size of our donation, while truly honorable and a testament to Ken/Members, is but a drop in the bucket of the major charities. Absolutely worthwhile, but minimally impactful. If we were to find a small charity, perhaps along the lines of what Bigbore mentions, we can have an absolute impact. Heck Chubdarter's fishing outing for the kids is a perfect example of a signficant impact. Perhaps we could help with his event again. . .if he is just crazy enough to set it up again.
We won't go wrong with any suggestions and I will happily participate irrespective of the choice.
Ken - you are good people.
Cheers.

The Stollery Children's hospital was the recipient both previous years.
We will definately have a new recipient this year, and as Sco22 put it, I am hoping it is one where we can actually make a difference, the point being $5000 to an organization that gets $multi millions yearly is barely worth a stamp on an envelope to them, but $5000 worth of food and supplies to the Slave Lake victims fund, or the little girl that was in the fire may be a life changing difference to them.
In the end, everyone absolutely appreciates the help, and they are all worthwhile causes.
And, thank you Sco22.

Although i've never participated, i've enjoyed following the PIF thread.
AHEIA gets my vote. "pay it forward" - we are all outdoors people. let's pay it forward to our up & coming outdoors people.

Still getting the odd PM and good ideas, I will run the thread another week, then we go to the polls.
All you guys that have not gotten in the PIF thread make sure you do this year, if not to play the PIF game but just to contribute in the charity thread great, and vise versa as well.
I am already rounding stuff up!

SCARS or similar ................... two of the best friends a person could ever wish for (both are lying at my feet as I type this) came from similar organizations. Overall they are understaffed and chronically underfunded.
