Default silver labs

Has anyone heard anything about silver labs? I was trying to do research on them and have heard conflicting stories about them. Some people say that they are dna tested to be purebred labrador, and others say they are a weimaraner lab cross. Has anybody heard anything about these dogs and if they make good hunters?

DNA testing cannot prove what breed any dog is. All it can tell you is that the animal is the offspring of the two DNA samples sent in as the parents. If the cross was made the generation before no one will be the wiser with a DNA parentage test.

I have owned all three colours and loved them all. But silver, seen pictures....not sure what I think of the colour, but they are still a Lab. Although AKC only recognizes the three colours.

The debate is still on about whether to reclasify the traditional yellow as Fox Reds, true Yellows, and Whites.

I believe I read in the Pheasants Forever magazine that silver labs are due to a recesive gene. Usually recessive genes are bad but not when it comes to color. I will try to find the article.

The recessive gene is the one that causes dilution of the color. Weims are homozygous for the dilute gene. The dilute of brown is called Silver and the dilute of black is called Blue in most dog breeds. There is currently a debate of the validity of Blue Weims as well since all Weims are supposedly homozygous for brown - therefore black cannot exist in the gene pool and so neither can the dilute of black.

Until recently there have been no records of a dilute lab in any records of the breed - the the breed does have pretty good records all the way back to its origins. It is statistically improbable that the dilute gene has existed in the breed all along and just now has been doubled up to express itself.
