Default Possession of DeadWildlife

I was just wondering in the circumstances if you have found a fresh killed deer head during the active season (Sept thru Nov) if you can use your tag to posses that Deer head using your deer tag? or do you have to always apply for a dead head permit?

Looking to here what others have done in this situation. i was reading the regulations and could not find anything about this certain topic im just looking for some insight on it, cheers.

Why wouldn't you just get the roadkill tag instead of wasting yours on a head?

Default Found dead wildlife permit

I’m in the process of going trough this for the second time.

I’m assuming you have found a naturally killed animal? In this case, and the case that there is no reason to believe the animal died by poaching or illegal activity, just call the nearest fish and wildlife office. (If you believe the animal was poached- Call Report A Poacher right away). Tell them (F&W) what you found. They will most likely put you in contact with an officer afield, they may come meet you, or just ask you to take lots of photos and record the area the animal was found. Then take the head/antlers to a fish and wild life office, pay you $10 or whatever it is, and obtain a permit to keep the findings. I’ll admit it’s not entirely hassle free, but I support the system- it is in place to detour poaching and to detour guys not legally tagging game. It’s a small price to pay and a easy enough thing to do, if you are trying to legally keep found dead wildlife.

I have had to call RAP line both times, as it’s been on the weekend I’ve found things and it’s impossible to talk to F&W office outside of operating hours, and the Officer at the RAP line will pass your info onto a field officer in the area. They usually call back within 24 hours. I recommend going through this, it’s not as bad as it sounds.

So you see a 180” in the ditch. Do you cut off the head and drive to F&W office? Now you are in possession of dead wildlife without a permit.

Do you go to F&W first for a permit and then return to find a headless buck in the ditch?

I just can’t for the life of me understand why someone would want such a set of antlers....

Is it just cause their big?

Their not connected to any kind of story or hunt.... what’s the appeal? What do you do with them?

There are so many in violation of this, just drive around and look at peoples flowerbeds and yards. F & W could make a killing in the cites charging people in possession of antlers.

I actually just finished going through the whole process of getting a permit. It was kinda a pain on account of the fact that the field officer was too busy to say I could or couldnt have the deer head. But the lady in the office was as accomodating as could be and told me to take the head and wait for her call back to say I could come in and grab the permit. I had actually smashed the deer a week beforehand with my truck and returned for the antlers later. Getting the skull mounted along with a Ram keychain to hang off of an antler for a keepsake.

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would care why someone would want something.

Sorry if your feels got touched.

But legit question..... just wondering if there’s any motivation there that I’m missing.

Lots If guys go shed hunting at the end of the year. And yes when you find a shed typically you pick it up and keep it. It’s just what you do. With a found dead animal what’s wrong with getting a permit and keeping the antlers? You can still be excited and proud of a set of antlers that were off a buck you don’t necessarily kill.

Tons of reasons to want the antlers. I used to make pens, key rings etc. Out of them, lathe turned. I have a number of friends who are knife makers, and there is lots of demand for antler scales and handles for blades.

Whitetail and mule are perfect diameter for pens, etc. And an elk or Moose rack is a gold mine of material. I know of people paying 2 or 300 for a nice moose rack

I routinely salvage roadkill so I have a bit of mileage wrt the laws about salvaging it.

The hunting regs state that you should contact AEP prior to salvaging roadkill however the Wildlife Act elaborates on it in more detail. If you call AEP for permission and you can’t get in touch with anyone to get permission, or if there’s no cellphone reception, you can legally salvage the roadkill and report it to AEP asap. They may require you to bring it in for inspection.

Policies seem to vary in different districts but that is the law. Around here you’re not allowed to just take the head, you recover the whole animal or none of it including the guts. If salvaging for bait the roadkill must stay in the WMU that it was killed in (CWD?).

I could be wrong but IMO AEP will frown upon someone only cutting the head off and leaving everything else.

My understanding as well...I also take lots of pictures, including a picture of it how I found it and a picture of it in my truck showing the license plate. I then get an exhibit permit to carry the dead animal, has to be placed in the same WMU it was collected according to the officers I have dealt with in the past.

Has anybody hit an animal and then wanted to keep the head. Do the same rules apply? Just curious, I had a very close call towards the end of October coming back from bow hunting. I was able to see the buck approach the road and hit the brakes in time, but he was a very nice 5x5.

Yes, I just did this exact thing. I returned to the scene a week later to find and keep the head. Getting the skull mounted as we speak!

We just paid 10.00 plus tax for a scavenged owl permit (I want the skull for my collection). We had to leave the carcass for the F&W officer to inspect and then all was good.
