Default Spiders....just one more reason to hate them.

OK, I'm a borderline arachnophobe, I will admit it. Those little buggers have far too many eyes and legs for my liking. But according to a recent study, the world's population of spiders could consume the entire population of humans on earth, and still be hungry. Jeezus! Not that they eat humans, but as far as biomass goes....they could do us for a snack. They are watching you now, from some corner of your house.....

.....spider densities of 1,000 or more individuals per square meter have been observed under certain “favorable” conditions – since Nyffler and Birkhofer don’t define what “favorable” means in this context, I’m going to assume it refers to dark, dusty places like the area under my bed.

Could you imagine a world without them? I couldn't.

And besides, some of them are kinda cute

I can't pretend cute.....sorry. The world without them would be full of all kinds of other insects that we don't want, and yes, they eat mosquitos by the bushell....but they give me the creeping sweats! Freak me out!

I hate spiders. The ones that I have encountered aren't even big or frightening looking. But for some reason they make my skin crawl.

This will help some of you sleep easier. I read somewhere that the average person swallows 10 spiders in their sleep over their lifetime. They don't really bug me but a buddy of mine couldn't sleep for 3 days after that nugget of info.

I don't know how some of you would survive living in places like Australia or South America where they have real spiders

My wife used to be like all you "girly guys"... But now she doesn't bat an eye when she sees one. I've taught her that without spiders, we'd be neck deep or deeper in other insects.. they are beneficial not a threat.

Thanks for this. Up all night now. Awesome. Guess I'm moving to Atlantis now. Or a live volcano.

And WRT the short vid clip in another post - I did scream like a girl. Just watching it. Thank JC that we don't have those here. Bears and cougars, no problem. Just not those monster spiders.

I like spiders, and enjoy having them (the native species) around... I could even see myself owning a "store-bought" tarantula (but the G/F would never allow it).

The only spider I'd ever be "afraid of" is a Brazilian Wandering Spider, AKA Banana Spider. Which, coincidentally, a good friend of mine had the pleasure of coming across one when we were in high-school.

He worked at the local Sobeys, in the produce dept. Called me from work one day, said they were sending him home cause he found a "banana spider" in a box of bananas that he was unpacking. We had no idea what it was.

Said it scared the s__t out of him, never saw a spider that big before (that wasn't in a glass box)... Come to find out it's THE most poisonous spider in the world !

Also this particular spider's bite causes an erection that can last for hours. Because of that farma companies study three venom as possible solution for the ED.

Spiders are kinda fascinating, pretty cool how they can build a web and catch their pray.

Snakes and fish is what I don't like. hate the feel of them. I know this is an outdoor forum.

Jewel spiders, best to leave them be. Docile, harmless, and do eat alot of bugs. Get a few on my deck every year, neat to watch.

Have you ever seen the nest area as the they hatch? 10s of thousands of babies. I'm not a spider lover but these guys are cool. Charlotte lives above my shop door, her web will darn near clothesline a person if you aren't paying attention going in the door.

Had 2 of this hatch under my deck this summer! There was one hanging from the rafters and it was a big one. It was head height. I called my wife out to come take a look at him. She comes out and walks right into it lol. Big spider in her hair I was laughing so hard

pretty cool isn't it? There was a jewel spider built a nest in the corner of the bay window of my ex's house. Set up a camera to keep an eye on it. So cool to watch the babies hatch, spread out and take to the wind on a line of silk.

What I don't get is why the spiders in South America/Asia/Australia/Africa need such powerful venom?! They'd be alright if it was a common North American wasp sting but noooooo here we have enough venom to kill a few bull elephants.

I too have the jewel type spiders along my fence. Used to raid them each year but then I let them eat the mosquitos. I even left the webs in place over winter and the frost highlighted some cool webs.
