RIP to your brother, so sad. keep in mind suicide affects the downtrodden and the filthy rich without preference or bias, kind of like cancer in that no one is immune.

I feel deep sorrow for your loss. Prayers and condolences to you and your family.

For what it is worth I recently heard a doctor saying that gamblers that are supposedly addicted are not to blame for their actions. The part of the brain that is activated when gambling has nothing to with a person's character or weakness. I say this in hopes that a person does not think those that fall to gambling are to blame. The government allows gambling knowing there will be human losses.

Default Suicide

I lost a friend to the same thing and I still wonder if i hadn't missed his phone call, would things be different? It is terrible but not your fault. Just being there for the survivors is the best thing to do. Sorry for your loss.

I cannot imagine the hopelessness one must feel that suicide seems like the best option...and after the act, so many second guess things they might have done. So sad when this happens. My sincere condolences.

I am so very sorry for your loss Fishalong.
We have lost numerous AO members and friends over the years to suicide, for various reasons, gambling being only one of them.
All i can say is enjoy the good memories of your brother and talk too someone about it.

I am very sorry for your loss. My condolences to you and yours.

I am going to guess that there are a lot of suicides each and every year right here in Alberta as a direct result of VLT gambling addiction. The government has to know that it is a problem but there is too much money at stake for them to pull these machines from just about every bar and pub out there; or so they say. Just watch the bar owners come out with their lawyers whenever there is talk of wanting these machines removed. The people and the families that are destroyed by these machines is in my opinion, FAR larger than anyone will admit. Part of the reason is because people feel embarrassed to say that they have an issue with gambling. I don't mind saying it. I have a problem with these machines and the guilt, the feeling of betrayal to ones loved ones, the feelings of failure, the feelings of stupidity can absolutely be overwhelming at times. When a person feels that they have become a liability and a burden to their loved ones, it is VERY difficult and almost impossible to get those feelings and thoughts out of your head. At the same time, there's thought that every gambler has: "Just one or two good wins can make this better" only leads to more of the same. To say that I don't know exactly how your brother must have felt would be a lie. I have stopped for the most part, but the feelings still come up from time to time and these machines are only a 5 minute drive away for anyone with a problem who has a moment of weakness.

I hope that you and your family are able to get through the next few days, weeks, moths, years, as best as you can.

I see where you say that you wrote this as a kind of memorial. I think its a great memorial. I was able to kinda picture you and him together talking fishing and hunting in better times as i read it. Keep those memories always.

My condolences to you and yours.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss! I have 2 brothers, and one of them was falsely accused of a heinous crime, because he turned a girl down when she had a crush on him, it nearly drove him to suicide as well, I was ready to go kill her, and would have if he had killed himself. He only confided in me a few years after the dust settled.
But I can still feel my stomach turn when I think of how close I came to losing my brother.
My condolences to you and your family in these hard times.
I'm praying for you.

Thank you for sharing your brother's memory with the rest of us outdoor enthusiasts -- it reminds us of the really important stuff. Your willingness to share these thoughts will help you get though the tough days ahead, too. Having worked in the casino industry long ago, I met many wonderful people that were experiencing the same addiction. It is surprisingly common and I can tell you that there is no simple explanation for it.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. God Bless.

Default I lost a brother that way too

Oh man, it's a hell of a situation, isn't it? My brother slowly drifted away from reality for various reasons, then to keep the story short, hanged himself in his backyard. As bad as that is, it gets worse - the EMTs found a faint heartbeat, and the story went on for two weeks while he was in a deep coma. Many more details, all sad and weird in every way.

Like you say, I remember him like he was my brother, all those things growing up. All gone now because of suicide. Life will of course go on, but there it is.

I feel for you, my man. PM me if you want more details, maybe have a coffee

Rick
