Default Opinions on powder storage in unheated garage

Hey all,

Just finally finished putting my reloading bench and storage area together.
It is in my unheated (for now) attached garage. We don't park a vehicle in it. Is there any reason not to have my powder in there or should I find a spot in the house for it?

Thanks, looking forward to getting back to the bench and doing some loading!

I would keep it indoors for the simple reason that the frequent and significant temperature changes in an unheated environment lead to lots of air pressure changes. Lots of air pressure changes means lots of air and its accompanying moisture going in and out of the powder container.

This a friend gave me 3 lbs. of IMR4064 stored in an unheated garage for a few years it was spoiled lots of red dust with a nasty acrid smell.

I would keep it indoors, I used some 4064 the other day from a container where the price tag read $7.95 lb.

My loading room is a insulated(not always heated) room I framed into my detached shop.
I have a electric heater I turn on when loading in winter and I run a dehumidifier from spring to fall. I have never had an issue with powder being stored there but I tend to use my powder supplies fairly quickly. There's probably a few pounds that have been there 3-4 years and it's still good.

I was given quite a few partial and full cans of powder from a family that the father passed away. Powder was put in the unheated garage for a few years. Checked it all when I got it and more than half had rusty/red dust and was no good. Keep tghe powder and primers in the dry basement.

Yoy can always throw those moisture absorbing bags in the power if your are worried. They are cheap to purchase. But if possible same tenperature so moisture doesnt accumulate is better.
