They're made with Stalcup's Medallion Sheeting. I really like the material, can be used for many things. Unfortunately, Shane passed away last year and this product had been discontinued. You can still get it on ebayand some shops still have a supply of it.
pikergolf, if you're looking for some creative techniques for tying mayflies, Stalcup's book, Mayflies:top to bottom, is a good book, It has step by step on a lot of patterns, including the deer hair dun I have pictured. I did some looking and can't find any step by step online for the pattern.

Decided to take part of today off from planing bamboo and tied some flies. This pattern has some run time on it and works quite well in lakes with the 1.25>1.5" long minnows.
The first one is a minnow pattern that has ideas ripped off from Thunder Creeks & Clousers. The body is UV Flash from Hareline, the overback is Olive marabou c/w a UV set resin to toughen it up and the tail is olive and white marabou c/w 2 strands of UV Flashabou. Hook is a Mustad 2XL nymph.
I've also tied this pattern w/o the dumb bell eyes for shallow water presentations. Use a heavy wire hook though. Minnow feeders tend to be larger.

And the last of them for today is some boatman that I have used with success for several years. I originally tied them w/o the small black bead and now use the bead as shown. The bead must be installed large opening forward, then tie in the scud back [bra elastic], slide the bead up over it and do legs and body. Pull the scud back over the bead and secure @ hook bend. A touch of Super Glue on each side of the bead "wicks" under the scud back helping increase longevity.

Variation of FGN's Krazy's Alpha Baetis
The tail is maybe too short, but looking forward to getting them wet anyhow.
Size 12
tail - mix of rootbeer flash and split rusty duck stretch floss
body - pheasant tail fibres and fine copper wire rib
thorax - stillwater sparkle dub in brown and scudback
Some sort of gold bead.

I dont....I may lose half a dozen in a season and thats mostly do to lack of concentration.
How many flies does the average person go thru in a season I wonder?

No I don't go through that many... probably about the same as you, just tying up a bunch so that I can spend more time fishing over the next couple of seasons instead of sitting at the vice.

I go through quite a few flies in a season.
I mostly chuck nymph rigs so I am constantly bouncing them off of anything laying on the bottom.
I also tend to give quite a few away to friends if I find something is working that they don't have.
Every year I seem to tie and buy between 10-15 dozen flies.

Probably went through 60 wooly buggers last spring, rest of the year probably another 60 flies.

Tying for the coming season
So far so good! I've gotten to tying about 150 flies tied this winter... (I've also had quite a bit of vacation time)... Pretty well finished tying until the results of the fly swap come in the mail.

That was slick I would not of thought to change the direction of the hair to add body to the fly.
