Default Suffield elk

Hey Folks
Just learned there are no partner tags on the suffield elk. If that's the case, can i still go with my Grandpa to assist if he gets one? Can I even access the base during the hunt without a license?

Thanks for the info

Yes you can go with him. You do not require a license.

There’s no partner tags on any elk, only moose.

If you are a youth 12-17 years old, you may get a partner license

Yea, you can go with him as a "helper". He may have up to two helpers on his trip. You still have to go through all of the military's hoops just like the tag holder. And I think you still need to be licensed to hunt. Don't quote me on that one.

Has anyone seen any around the base? I hear it's not even close to what it use to be.

helpers dont need to be licensed.

everyone needs to sign in in the morning, hunters need to register their rifles on the first day.

You can go as a helper. They say there are still lots of elk, but it's not like it was a couple years ago.

Each hunter can have two helpers, they do not need to be a licenced hunter.

My partner and I came up on a herd of what must have been over a thousand on the first day, you just need to be willing to get out of the truck and spend the day hiking up and down the rolling hills to find them. Getting close enough to take a clean shot at one(and only one) animal is another story.

Bagged one last year there. Take (or be) a helper, draw into the NWA, park on the far east side and hike into the hills. Be prepared to walk A TON. We took it 8.5km in, on day 3, made 2 trips in to pack it out. Could have taken one day 1, had plenty of small herds and one fairly large herd of a few hundred. They're all there in the NWA (or across the river). On the main there is just a ton of mulies and antelope, all who pay you no care at all. Remember you need specific gear for the NWA

For the newbie, what’s the NWA and special gear?

Natural Wilderness Area, the former protected pocket of land where the elk went to hide out, its walk in only and its massive so you need some basic survival gear, food, water, hand held GPS, game retrieval means (sled or cart), and you can't go in alone

Default Helper

Do You get an email or something form the base with waiver forms for the helpers or do they just sign in at the briefing

When you say “you can’t go in alone” is that a suggestion or an actual rule?

you have to have at least 2 people to go in the NWA area draw
you to have the following

GPS ( real one not cell phone )
sled or cart or carrier packs as it is all foot access
food and water for at least 12 hours
emergency blanket or bivy sacks

the base is massive we got 2 cow elk 2 years ago (when you got 2 cow tags per draw) and had to leave one over night as it was to late to get the second one back to the truck in the pitch dark -25C night
as the crow files on from our elk near the northeast corner we were 71km as the crow flies to range control at the southwest corner of the base
