Default Bear den in the prairies

Took a little tour on Sunday just to see what's new in some old stomping grounds. This hole was a new addition since last fall. About 2-1/2 ft across and who knows how far it goes back in. A bit bigger than your average badger judging by the claw marks in the hole. North side of the Milkriver Ridge. To bad about the fog in the morning kind of screwed up some good pictures of the mulies.

That's very cool. There is one under an old house a few miles from here.

Grizzly, not the first sign we’ve seen the last couple years.

It could be a Bear took over a Badger den. I know they do sometime take over abandoned Coyote and Wolf dens.

I've never seen a den in that sort of soil, I don't think a Bear would dig in such a place if there wasn't an existing hole.

But one never knows. It is certainly bigger then any Badger hole I have seen and I've seen Bears use holes too small for any human to enter.

A hole that size could house a pretty good sized Bear.

Whatever made it, it's probibly not very deep. I've crawled into Bear and Wolf dens. The ones I saw were less then six feet deep.

Saw a "den" tonite that was very much like the one pictured , in fact I think it is the same hole from what the farmer told me .. Looks like maybe the work of a badger if it is actually the same one . Not doubting that there are bears in the area , just havent seen him ... yet .

Did the farmer tell you about the calf's being kill and eaten just south of this spot? I was cleaning out his badger problem a couple days ago and there is no physical way you could have spread the claws of those badgers to fit the claw marks in the hole. The hole by the way is filled in to less than a third of what it was by all the traffic checking it out now. Same farmer also had an encounter with a sow and a couple cubs a few years ago right close to there.

The calf that he referred to was mine , so I know all about it .. I have no proof that the bear killed it but am quite sure thats what cleaned it up . Ya I saw the den , yes Ive seen the tracks in the snow and yup Im sure they are around but I dont think the hole is a bear den . Maybe , just maybe it is all a coincidence and we have a different farmer friend .. is his name Joe ? It would be a good location for a den , easy digging and a north slope and all ... maybe the hole was bigger . I live close and will keep an eye on it and let you know if the owner returns . A guy could put out a trail camera but it would be a donation in this country .
