Default Powder load comparisons

I'm reloading .38 Special wad cutters and .357 Magnum semi-round nose, and using TiteGroup powder.

If someone says they get the best performance with X grains of Alliant, or Y grains of IMR,how do you compare that load to what I'm using with TiteGroup? In my case, that would be 4.6 gr for the 38s, and 5.6 gr for the 357s.

I really don't want to spend $30 or $40 for new cans of powder, so is comparison in the tables of a reloading book the only way? This is what one old fella suggested. Or (I joke) do I have to trade for a little of the other powder to test load and compare? Each gun differs, of course.

Experiences?
