Default Fly fishing during the winter?

Hi, I recently bought a fly fishing rod and I'm chopping at the bit to get out fly fishing. I was curious what I should use during the winter for a fly? Also has anyone had any luck fishing the red deer river by drumheller? Are their any other good places for fly fishing during the winter by drumheller?thanks

Cool

Is there even open water that far south. as I belive the mile or two below dickson remains ice free.keeping guides ice free is a challenge. If there is a hatch it can be momentary. I use streamers but keep a midge on an other rod for a fast switch in case fish show. Sorry cant help more as your too far south and east. Please be very careful it is not the relm of the newbangler.

Be very careful of ice, both the stuff you're standing on, and the stuff coming downstream.

Try heavy nymphs or swing streamers. If the weather is warm enough, you may catch a midge hatch. In which case try a griffith's gnat or f-fly.

Chatted with a couple guys who were fishing the Crowsnest today. More die hard than myself that's for sure. Once the guides start freezing up I am out of there.

I fly fish year round my friend. Winter fly fishing has been some of the most rewarding experiences I've had; no people, fish still bite, and when they are not biting the surroundings are beautiful.

Your guides will freeze up! Best solution? chip off the ice with your gloves and keep at it. Fish are scarce, but when you tie into a big one in the middle of winter there is no better feeling!

I use nymphs in the winter and I stick to them all winter long.

As for areas to fish in that country? I am not sure.

Best of luck and keep warm & safe!
