Best way to hunt black bear- no bait?
What is the best way to hunt black bears in zones that do not allow for bait? I went out today to an area of Alberta and bait is not allowed due to grizzlies. I saw lots of signs of black bears on the roads, as well as on the game trails. Searched the river banks and not so many. Not much green yet as the grass and weeds are just starting to sprout. It's mainly flat land so not much luck to go and glass south facing slopes. I am hoping in two weeks when we go again the bears may be hitting the fields and roads to eat dandelions and clover?
Can someone help me somehow? Please and thank you.

Give it a break already. My dad is a car mechanic that loves to sit by the tv more than being outside.

You could try distress calls, but if it hasn't greened up yet in your area they may not be too interested in meat....on the other hand, they might investigate the racket regardless?
Using hand/mouth calls for bears is exhausting though, they need a lot of encouragement and nearly constant calling to keep their attention, and I'd have to double check but I think using e-calls for bears is illegal?

I don't morning hunt black bears often, but enjoy getting out for a long afternoon/evening hunt. Sounds like you are doing it right keeping an eye on the greenest growth out there. Pipelines, ditches, lease sites, cutlines, and blocks will all hold bears. The greener the grass, the better.
Have had some good luck running into big grizz in the early early morning, and also seen some decent black bears, but had a lot better luck and enjoyment in the afternoons and evenings.

I don't think I would be using distress calls in grizz country.

Cover a lot of ground, if you see nothing move on. Bear density is nothing like ungulate, even where there's a lot of them, there isn't that many. I saw 5 friday, and 5 saturday, there was at least 10 km between each sightings.
