Fishin Tip …… W/W's & Flutter Spoons

I’ve used Wetaskiwin’s when I first started fishin Sylvan for Whites, didn’t like them because they snag more fish than properly hooking them in the mouth. I liked the flutter action you get with them & decided to modify a few by drilling a 5/32 hole in the bottom, adding a split ring and the appropriate sized treble hook. I sorted through a bunch of old tackle and salvaged the components I needed or you can buy them at any fishin store including Cdn Tire.

I add a Pink Mag only on one of the hooks and that’s what Mr White, Walleye, Pike and the occasional Perch chase after. For even greater success for Whites, I add a W/W approx. 5-6 sometimes 8” above the flutter spoon. If they’re aggressive you can get them on the spoon, if not they’re attracted by the spoon’s fluttering action & hit the W/W most of the time. If fishin on sand or rock/rubble bottom, I’ll flash the spoon a number of times then drop it to the bottom stirs up some sand & leave it lying on the bottom, the Whites come over & hit the W/W. I only use a Flutter spoon & W/W on 1 rod, I select a popular color W/W that produces fish and some days it works & other days it doesn’t. An option for your consideration that may improve your success with Whites.

The flutter spoons in my pic’s are the Wetaskiwins, Kastmaster and a Slender Spoon, the major fishin stores sell them.

Trust this has been helpful …

Cheers

David

Very basic question for someone who's never got a Lake White, Do you put bait such as a maggot on the wireworm? or is it more of a 'fly nymph' approach like the copper john?

Thanks

Don't be afraid to use any flies you've tied. I personaly like using a hares ear nymph with a pheasant hurl head . Bit of lead weight for faster sinking in deep water , none for shallower water . Anything that resembles the small freshwater shrimp works amazing around any weeds or grass bottom. I've found fewer refusals with flies. The only difference is you tie the flies with the hook up for ice fishing instead of down for fly fishing. good luck

Edit ..... were at 99,993 views this should take it over 100K ....

Post this previously ....

Fishin Tip ... another advantage of tipping your w/w with a Pink Mag is when your sight fishin in deeper or stained water you can clearly see were the hook end is, which helps when Mr White inhales it & you see it disappear then set the hook fast before it spits it out. The glow beads on my w/w's help me see the hook end of the presentation, similar to Pink Mag's.

I’ve been reading this thread with lots of interest and would like to thank Zip for such a great thread. Today I’m sitting on a beach in Mexico drinking beer and made up some of the stuff he has been talking about to try when I get home. All but 8 are 10’s and those 8 are 12’s, should I go bigger?

My preference is #8 or #10, I have a few larger hooks like #6, however, it's a bit difficult to get them to sit perfectly horizontal not to mention Whites struggle trying to inhale a much larger hook, so mine sit in the box most of the time.

Nice assortment of w/w's they should produce. I miss Mexico, lots of fond memories in Playa, it's snowing here today, enjoy the life on a beach.

Awesome,,Thanks for the info.
So they're soft enough to slip around the bend? I have some that are semi hard and they don't make the turn around the bend
I notice you put them on the hook side of the wire as well.

The one's I picked up at TFH are soft plastic they easily slip over the bend/barb, as well there's no difficulty pushing 20 ga wire under them. FYI ... I also use some hard plastic coloured beads & drill out the centre hole slightly to get them over the hook turn/barb.

Putting them on the hook end helps me see which way the hook is facing & when a Whites comes in they normally go after the glow bead, when it disappears, set your hook quick because they will spit it just as quick.

In Sylvan, on a bright day & if there's minimal snow on the ice, I can see a brass w/w with a glow bead sight fishin in 12-14 fow. A Pink Mag will do the same, however, I find the glow beads illuminate a bit more in clear water. Add a Pink Mag to a w/w with a glow bead & it makes them that much easier for you & Mr. White to see sight fishin.

Trust this was helpful.

Cheers

D.

A few Examples ...

good info...thx again.
I've tried drilling out some hard beads but find they generally break on me when I'm tightening the wire up to them.
Where I fish you can't see bottom in 6 FOW. I seem to do best in 3-4' for sight fishing. Deeper than 6' I really on my flasher but like you say its hard to time the hook set that way.

Tks for posting the pic's, not so goofy, I see lots of productive creations. If you can find some of the soft glow beads make a few in bright brass in size 10 nymph hook with the bead at the hook end, they may improve your success.

Ended up ordering the Glow Beads I found on Amazon & made a few W/W’s today. Most of them are too large, they may have other applications, be creative. They’re hard plastic not soft, the ones I used are slightly larger than the others I found at TFH, I used a slightly larger hook Mustard #8 (S82-3906B) Nymph. The trick to get them on your hook & around the bend is either drill out the hole slightly or put a few into some boiling water and they will go on either over the hook end or the eye, none snapped or broke. Made a few to try this coming week since the weather is warming up. They glow nicely, Mr. White will love them.

D.

Looks like the white coloured ones glow the most.
