Default Upgrading your gun license

I was wondering if it is possible to obtain a prohibited license, if you don't already have one? Also, do you automatically get a license, if one of your present firearms gets put on the prohibited list?

I dont think you can get prohib status if you didnt have it when it came into effect. If one of your current firearms becomes prohib, I believe it becomes grandfathered - in that you can keep it as long as you're alive. It does not allow you to buy other prohibs. At least thats the way I understand it - perhaps a call to the CFC is in order.

Default Inheritance or grandfathering

Inheritance (from immediate family) of a pre-1945 prohib, or being grandfathered because you own a gun which has become probihited is the only way. Those that were are grandfathered have a 12(6) on their pal (or pol). When you inherit a pre-1945 prohib you get a 12(7) on your pal which allows you to own only that one... you can't acquire others, the 12(6) alllows you to acquire others of the same class. One other thing, you must have the correct class on you pal, so if its a pistol or otherwise restricted firearm you must also have a restricted liscence. You must also belong to a gun club or be a bonified collector even though the person you inherited it from may not have been required to be a colletor or gun club member due to the nature of grandfathering.

I've been though this and it's an incredibly painfull and frustrating process, the CFO was of generally limited help. If you have a family heirloom or collectable which falls into this class, try to get it transfered before the owner passes away, or else it will be lost forever to the great metal melter.
