Default Wiring a 30 amp 220V Plug.

I know there are lots of guys on here handy with household wiring.

I need to run a 240V construction heater to keep the frost out of my basement as the furnace has quit.

The Heater has a 3 prong 30 Amp plug on it and I want to plug it into my dryer receptacle which of course is a 4 prong 50 amp outlet.

Which 3 wires of the 4 prong do I use?

Thanks for your help!

Maybe hire pro.

Dryers are typ 30 amp and construction heaters usually are 20
Amp.

If I was in a bind I would cut the plug Off the heater and remove the dryer plug. Nut white and stuff it In the box.

Green to ground and the other two colours on the heater to red and black in the box.

You can buy the 20 amp plug you need at most hardware stores however.

The three prong is two power one neutral. If you unscrew your dryer plug you'll see black red white and bard copper. You do not match up with bare copper.

Most problem with furnace is the senning rod . It is easily accessed. On screw one wire . Remove clean with light abrasion . Reinstall. Please shut furnace off first.

Default black + red + ground

Easiest solution for cheater cord: pick up a 6' dryer cord, 5376 Leviton 30A 250V surface mount receptacle and an Iberville 806 or similar cable clamp (to clamp the loose end into the receptacle body).
Attach the black (hot), red (hot), and ground wires to the receptacle, cap off the loose white (neutral) with a Marrette or tape it off. Plug everything together and you are good to go.
If you are not comfortable wielding a screwdriver, as some would suggest, then please contact your favourite sparky for assistance.

Yes, that was more my question I guess, did I want to connect the neutral or the ground wire to the third prong.

Be sure that the breaker feeding the heater is adequate to protect the heater, and the lines feeding the heater.
