Default Custom knife maker recommendation

I got the itch for something new. A fixed blade maybe stag or horn. Y’all know of any good knife makers to recommend?

I would highly recommend Clint Chisan. He's in Strathmore and does amazing work for very reasonable pricing. He's on CGN under "clint c" and he happens to have a beautiful bowie for sale right now using mule deer antler for the handle.

I have three custom knives. The makers are Roger hatt. Gill cote. Eugene schreiner. They are not only works of art but extremely functional. Hold an edge extremely well. The cote and hatt are s35vn steel. I’d like a custom from one person in each province. But they arnt cheap and rightfully so. Minimum $300

Default Custom knife maker recommendation

I’m a fan of Bob Dozier, Dan Crotts and Phil Wilson.
Of the three Dozier and Crotts make my hunting knives and I’m not a fan of Phil’s hunting designs. I’ve got one of Phil’s fillet knives and his legendary reputation is well deserved. He can get THE most performance from a knife, of any maker I know of. It’s worth checking his website to see if they’re up your alley because they’ll out cut anything else I’ve used or read about.

I don’t go much on the horn or stag but I’ve had one of each to try them.

I’m more a fan of mammoth ivory and it costs the same as sambar stag.

Ron Post knives are nice from Ontario. He has fixed patterns that he follows for blade shape. All mine have the gaurds from him.

I like Clints antler handle knives, but all of the above knives are also very nice.

Myself and my family have a bunch (10 at least) custome knives from Gill Cote. I recommend him fully.
About ten years ago I bought a custom skinner from the knife guy in GP. It’s a fantastic design and was very reasonable, but you will not get the bling factor or fancy leather work of a Cote knife.
You should consider contacting Grohman knives and have one there knives done in a different steel and sheath. I recently had one built, it’s great. Grohman knives IMO have the best designs of all times for outdoor and skinning knives.

Yup Ed is another great blades mith, IIRC he was trained originally by Bill Schiller out of Saskatchewan but II may be wrong.
One of the best I remember was Frank Nero, tremendous knife maker.

I have a knife from him and it is nice, BUT I would not recommend him at all. I paid for it up front and was told it would be done end of MArch (I ordered it end of Feb). I thought perfect and paid him the money (minus shipping as I would pay that when done and we knew what shipping was going to be). I then heard nothing from him until I contacted him on May 3 asking if he had a chance to do it yet. On May 3 he replied that he would get to it that week but he was sorry for the delay with materials taking longer to get there due to covid. No big deal, I understand and wasnt worried about it to much. Then I didnt hear from him again until I contacted him again on June 3, nicely asking if he got the materials. He again replied that he did have the materials and should have it done by MOnday (june 8). I said ok sounds good and if it worked out I would get a buddy working in Burns Lake to grab it and bring it home with him. Again, I heard nothing until I messaged him on June 18 asking if it was done as buddy was done his hitch and coming home. Finally I got my knife from him on June 20.

So long story short, the knife is nice and I have never heard anything bad about Don and he does lots of stuff for the BC wild sheep society (the reason I bought a knife from him). Im not sure if my debacle with him was an isolated incident or not, BUT I will never do business with him again and will not recommend him to anyone else either.

Thanks, man! I appreciate your kind words! I'm glad the knives I sharpened are still sharp!
As for selling my own knives, I don't think I'm ready yet
I need to gain more confidence and figure out pricing.

Cheers!

Wow, I feel awful that I completely forgot about Jason Leclair. I actually have one of his fixed blades and it's an amazing piece. On top of the top notch work he does, he's a 100% stand up guy.

So yeah, x2 on Jason Leclair.

I have 3 knives from Jason, as well.
They are great and he is a great guy.
Though I don't believe he is on par with guys like Dozier or Crotts, but a great local bladesmith.
My next hunting knife will be a Crotts.
But they do cost more.
