Default Stars Lottery Alberta - should we care?

Hi all.

Was just thinking about a friend who needed an airlift via Stars and whether as an outdoorsman, do I see Stars as a great thing?

About Stars. https://starslotteryalberta.ca/cause.php

It was a pretty quick self reflection. Stars is the only real fast way to evacuate an injured outdoors enthusiast from a bad scene to a hospital. This unique service needs to keep running strong. Expanding where needed and firmly staying put. These fundraising efforts are critical and as such I am buying a few tickets.

https://starslotteryalberta.ca/prizes.php#sweetHome

As these lotteries go, this lottery is one of the cheapest at $30 for one ticket.

I encourage everyone to help this charity out as likely someone we know has used it or will need it some day.

Cheers

Sun

If you travel on a public highway there is a good chance that Stars could be the difference between life or death, or receiving some very important critical care or not. Pretty easy choice IMO.

Absolutely, I buy every year, very good cause
They do nothing but save people in bad accidents where ambulance would take to long or not available,
I actually had to arrange for them to come up to the bombing range quite a few years ago to pick up a fellow that had an accident on a service rig.

Nobody in my family has ever required Stars and I'm hoping we never do. A quick shout out though. My daughter slipped on the water slide stairs and required several stitches on her chin. While waiting in the hospital, a pilot walked by and chatted with her, gave her some stickers, a pencil, and some band aids. Although a small thing, I appreciated him going above and beyond for a little girl he didn't know.

A coworkers wife is a pilot for them.

The stories he has told me, makes me glad we have such a company working for us to keep us safe.

I've been buying tickets yearly since the beginning, it's a great cause that saves lives. Also support Edmonton hospitals and cancer society.

The municipality I work for donates to STARS annually. STARS sends in a representative each year to provide a yearly report on the organization. The lottery represents a significant amount of their total funding.

This is one program the government should be funding 100%.

Stars is an great service. Have you researched what their board of directors gets paid? After doing that ..do you still want to donate to to them?

Great service. Board appears to be volunteer.

https://stars.ca/leadership-and-governance/our-board/

Pulled this from their financial report.

Director Compensation
The volunteer members of the organization’s Boards of Directors are not reimbursed for their service on the STARS Boards or Standing Committees.

So yes. Donating is a good thing.

I always think about that. Donating directly you can a charitable tax receipt.

Still one needs to understand how people like to financially contribute. A huge portion of charitable giving is in the lottery format. A chance to win however knowing the funds goes to a worthy cause.

Still to each their own so long as you are helping that is a great thing. I wouldn’t disparage anyone’s choice to that regard.

My wife and I bought 6 tickets this year plus a few on the 50/50 draw. We hope to Dickens that our family or friends never need the service they provide but dang sure want it there, up and ready if the worst was to happen.

Wow. I am impressed with all the support for Stars.

Winning the house would be cool also.

Yup board appears to be volunteer.... appearances can be deceiving.

It was established by a board that created a board. Look up the meaning of obfuscate ... I know because I know the son of one of the original founders.

Stars does good things but don't for a minute think think that it’s all altruistic.

Care to post some sort of proof instead of just making random claims?

I also would like to see some proof of this. But really at the end of the day I could care less how much their board of directors makes. I do know stars works and has saved many peoples lives. Thankfully it has never been me or any of my family taking a flight but I have been on 3 worksites now where stars has made landings and taken injured people out. Without them here in Alberta there would be a lot of people that would not have a chance if/when something goes wrong.

Been a supporter for 18 years. I buy the tickets, calendars, and throw some extra cash there way. I have a long story as why I am a supporter.

Dodger.

Same for me. Good for the board, and I hope everyone involved in this organization is doing well. Today I get to play with my grandchildren, if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be here to do that. I donate as much as I can.

Exactly.

Filing false financial statements is illegal. What he is saying is false. I posted proof to the opposite.

Stars is a well run organization doing great work.

Enough said.

There are 2 orgs/charities I donate to every year.
STARS, and the Stollery!

STARS because I work and play where STARS could mean life or death for myself, a friend, or a co-worker.

The Stollery because the Pit Boss spent day 1 and day 2 of his life there, and I was so impressed seeing what goes on, it’s a must donate for me.

Ditto here.
Hitched a life saving ride with them 23 years ago and (luckily) wasn't conscious to remember it.
My entire family has donated to the tickets and calendars every year since.
I saw "donated" because no one has ever won anything!
