Default Spotting Scopes for the Range

Just curious what everyone is using for spotting scopes at the range? magnification? features? brand/model? what you like and don't like and how far you can see your bullet holes in the paper without any problems.

I had a Vortex viper and it was useless for spotting shots at 1100 yards. I took it back and bought a Vortex razor. No problems spotting hits or misses at long range now.

Kowa TSN 883, the distance to clearly make out bullet holes varies with the target, and the caliber. Larger caliber bullets with a white/orange target isn't an issue at 400m-500m. but small calibers on a black/white target is much less, .17 cal holes in a black bullseye are tough at much beyond 200m-300m.

Baush & Lomb Elite 15-45x60.
Now sold under the Bushnell name. Was the issued scope to U.S. Marine snipers fifteen years ago. No problem so far seeing hits at 500m (308)

Don’t cheap out on them. Even higher magnification does not mean you’ll see your bullet holes. I used to have an entry level Leupold 15-45 magnification spotting scope that was blurry on bullet holes that I could see very clearly through my Leupold Mark 4 6-24 x 50 scope on my heavy barrel target rifle, this was despite its wider objective lens and higher magnification level. The thing is that blur from lower quality glass makes more for more blur when it’s magnified!

I also found that I did not like the angled eyepiece I had selected for that spotting scope, it was a PITA to be looking down then to transition over to my rifle at another angle entirely; re-establishing your target becomes more difficult that way, at least for me.

Couldn't spot a 30cal double hole on a 200yd match target with a 15-45 Elite at a match. Went out the next week, took that target with me and pasted it up on a column in a mall parking lot @ 200yds, bought a 20-60 Kowa77 and an expensive tripod that day. About 27-28 yrs ago. Never regretted it one bit since.

I use an angled eyepiece rotated ~90 degrees to the side, and located so I just need to turn my head slightly to view either,
without altering my body or shoulder position or move my rifle or hand position.

For prone I use either
a photo tripod with center column inverted and scope suspended under the tripod adjusted with 2 short and 1 long leg.
or scope mounted on a heavy steel plate and a very slick multi adjustable photo arm.

On the bench, I use a clamp mount and the same very slick multi adjustable photo arm.

Good Luck, YMMV.
